1/15 Dynamite Cop (DC)
2/4 Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (PS3)
5/19 Portal 2 - Single Player (PS3)
5/22 Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished (PSP)

I never got around to playing this game when it came out the bajillion other times it did and man do I regret it. What an awesome, fun game this is. There are a lot of simplistic elements to it, almost RPG-lite compared to games now a days, but I really enjoyed the story and the gameplay. Diving into Ys II now...

I am so impressed with this game. It's really a stellar fighting game through and through. I haven't played a multiplayer battle yet, but I made it through the game on normal difficulty with three different characters. I can tell I still have more to learn since I'm still doing a bit of button mashing, but I've begun to figure out ways I can use my assistant character to help me gain combos and I've started figuring out how to link moves and use supers.

Picked Sonic for the NGPC up at the local retro store this weekend - this is a nifty little gem that deserved to be in the Gems collection a lot more than most of those roms taking up space on a mini DVD.

It has the level design of Sonic 2 with some of the gimmicks of Sonic 3 - and none of the friends in an active role. It's a surprisingly solid, if somewhat underrated, entry into the series.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

So I haven't had a whole lot of time for gaming this month - with final uni deadlines approaching, the only things I was working on finishing were my essays (and finish them I did, University beaten! What a nasty final level it had too!)

Anyhow, most of the gaming I did was quick 10 minute blasts of the built in 3DS software. I beat the Mii Plaza's StreetPass Quest mode (Find Mii in the US). Its a fun little RPG to waste 5 minutes on each day, more fun than it has an right to be seriously XD. You can buy heroes who go through rooms of a dungeon to save your king (limited each day by the amount of play coins you can get - through walking with the 3DS). You can also get heroes by passing people who also have their 3DS on them. So far, I have gotten 5 different street passes - my girlfriends brother, 2 from game shops in town, and 2 when studying at my university library, which was a nice surprise! Anyhow, as you progress, you unlock Nintendo themed hats which your mii can wear in street plaza (nowhere else unfortunately), and the game needs 2 runs through to unlock them all. I have only 2 fights left of the second run, so not long now.
One thing that makes me happy about the 3DS is how often it references pikmin - I was genuinely worried Pikmin 3 was/is vapourware, but there are pikmin AR cards, pikmin hats and pikmin jigsaws on the 3DS, along with mario, samus, link and kirby, and over other big nintendo franchises like Donkey Kong, so someone in the company obviously still likes it!

Face Raiders I beat early this month too. Its a fun and bizarre little shooter, although the way it relies on you to take new photos of faces every time you play is annoying - it puts the new face next to the high score, when I want MY face next to it so I know the score is mine. Otherwise its fun, and later on, a bit challenging and a good way to waste half an hour here and there.

Dead or Alive Dimensions is a new pick up of mine to reward myself for finishing Uni, and I'm glad I got it - it's excellent, just my kind of fighter. Its 3D, fast paced and relies on getting hands on with your opponents - no fireballs to worry about here. The counter system is pretty cool, and it feels very satisfying when you stop a long combo of your opponents with a well time reversal into a juggle of your own. The graphics look very nice in the game, and it has a solid 25 characters (all 24 of the characters from other games minus the Halo character, plus a playable version of a character not playable before). Its my first Dead or Alive game, but I certainly want to try the others now. It also manages to use all the features of the 3DS in some way - it has streetpass matches, spotpass content being distributed, a kinda cool but pointless feature where you can move the ds around to look around the battle arenas on the title screen, and touch screen controls for combos, which dont seem as broken as they sound. Its got lots to do too, with a story mode, arcade modes, survival, tag battles and 1000 trophies to unlock.

One thing I do find interesting about the title is how its known for emphasising certain assets of the feminine form - but actually, although it quite obviously does this (bouncy bouncy) it doesnt seem worse than most fighters to be honest - in fact, the costumes in soul calibur are generally more revealing than they are here! Either way, I highly recommend this one, its packed full of content and it's really fun.

P.S. I guess I'm still in essay writing mode...this is a pretty long post

I always wanted to try the Pikmin games. Aren't they RTS games? I really need get more Gamecube games in general now that I think about it.

RTS is probably the closest approximation, although its not quite RTS I'd say. It is however awesome. Most people prefer the 2nd, more battle orientated one to the first, because of more pikmin types and no time limit, but I much prefer the believable environments of the first game, the pressure from the 30 day time limit and the more puzzle and exploration based nature of its gameplay. I do love both though. Definetely worth a pick up.

I've beaten the PSX version of MM8 game a couple of times but I had a chance to pick up the Saturn original a few weeks ago.

It's amazing what they took out to make the game work on the Playstation. There are WAY more enemies on screen at once now.

Even more amazing is how my opinion about this game has changed since I first played it 10 years ago. I harbored STRONG distaste for this game back in the late 90's. It wasn't enough like Mega Man 1-6 and I preferred the 7 art style.

Now I am having a blast - I barely remember what my specific complaints were about this game. Mega Man 8 is one more example of the ironic legacy of the 32 bit era. Games that weren't 3D polygon based struggled to get published - but most of those 2D wonders have aged the best out of the PSX / SAT libraries.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
