I feel Dead Space was survival-horror due to a few things, while alone don't mean much, however put together made it pretty survival-horror in my opinion.

Things like lighting, sound design (with surround sound), closet scares, disgusting scenes of brutality, enemies that travel through ventilation systems, and overall tense atmosphere.

No argument here. We all have various opinions on what survival horror is. Hell, I thought Bioshock was survival horror when I first played it.

Ammo is never a problem on dead space. You can buy tons of it.

My main rule to consider a game a survival horror or a horror themed game is if they force you in a room to kill X ammount of enemies before they let advance, the resources are scarce, they let you choose between combat or running away. Atmosphere and general tension too but dead space looses that in the first ten minutes when basically screams you how to kill the enemies.

Now these rules are not law at all, but at least they work to me so far.

the thing that makes a game 'survival horror' to me is the whole 'survival' part, namely having you deal with limited means (limited ammo, ineffective weapons, finite health resources, etc) in a horror setting. RE4 for example doesn't really have you do any of that, at least to no more extent than you'd find in most action games, but it keeps the horror setting and aesthetic.

Even though I haven't ever played any true survival horror games, I think I would agree with you on this.

Although I would say that RE4 is borderline. You can't exactly just run n' gun the game, Rambo style. Ammo and health isn't a huge issue (at least not on normal mode) but you still have to take care not to run out. You also have limited space to carry items in.

Speaking of, how many tiles does the rocket launcher take up? I'm considering buying it, but not if I have to sacrifice too many items in my case. While we're on the subject, what do you all usually do for weapons? I just got the Red9 and sold the standard handgun. I have the shotgun, the rifle, and the TMP. I have the stocks for the Red9 and TMP, and the scope for the rifle. Honestly, I bought the stock with the Red9 and have no idea if it's actually worth the space it takes up in the case.

Oh that's one of the beauties of RE4 thinking about your weapons and what you should carry. don't buy the rocket launcher it takes about 30% more than a shotgun and you will find one free later in the game. I usually don't use stocks since they take up space and the last time i played i barely used the TMP, actually i think i didn't even bought it. The stats for each weapon at full upgrade change depending on the version of the game... i think in the wii the Red 9 is the most powerfull fully upgraded.

There was also a magnum called the Killer 7... I think? It was a deagle.

I liked the stocks, but they do take up space. One thing to consider with the rocket launcher is that it's a one use thing. Takes up a ton of space. But it can generally kill mostly anything it hits in one shot, but yeah.

The shotgun/rifles are usually my priority, while having a decent pistol. All the RE's generally have a magnum and my rule for those is to always save them for bosses only.

You can definitely get through the game with different combinations of the weapons. I actually don't like upgrading some of the earlier ones because you eventually find better versions of said weapon, like the shotgun/rifle. But they still have different stats, so some of the earlier weapons might be more powerful upgraded, while another model might have way better ammo capacity or something. There's a bit of a catch to having a lot of weapons too, you'll probably have upgrades pretty spread out, but if you focus on just a few at a time you can upgrade them quicker. Who knows. Just do what you can and what fits in that case heh. I think ammo drops are generated with what you've got, least that's how it's always felt to me.

Killer 7 is cool but the broken buterfly is better, the revolver, you can get it for free and is far more powerfull.

But yeah play the game and the weapons you feel like, if you like one and got ammo for it keep it.

Killer 7 -- a reference to the Suda51 game published by Capcom?

Well I ended up getting the rocket launcher (it takes up the same amount of space as the shotgun, btw). I really only wanted it so that I could kill El Gigante easily. I was up to the point where you choose the left or right gate to go through. I went left, but it would have bothered me not getting the treasure on the right path.

I never bought the rocket launcher during any of my playthroughs. I always picked up the free one and used it on the giant flower boss. In fact I always used it on that boss.
