It's bizarre to me that Sony target the design and price point of the Playstation family to be a luxury entertainment item, and then make the most important part of the hardware interface - the controller - out of lightweight, cheap feeling plastic that feels like a childrens toy. It felt too light and fragile, the plastic felt cheap, the buttons felt to shallow, the sticks felt a little rubbery and the triggers, whilst much improved from the PS3, felt terrible in comparison to the Xbox 360 triggers or the Wii U's ZL and ZR buttons. Baby steps I guess though - it's nice to see them make some bigger changes from the frankly horrendously out of date Playstation 1 controller design.

The game I got to play was Resogun. It was pretty fun, and I liked it. The difficulty seemed a little easy perhaps, it certainly didnt seem as chaotic as the likes of Geometry Wars, even on Veteran difficulty. It's a simple little game, but it's some good times. The explosions at the end of the level actually showed off the PS4's power pretty well I felt.

It's still early days for me with these new consoles (in fact, I haven't even gotten a PS3 yet, never mind a PS4), but what little I've seen seems OK. I'm just waiting for there to be a reason to buy one still - nothing appeals yet. I'll give it a few years to get going I think. I'll stick with my Wii U for now.
Resogun's last level was giving me a fit earlier this week. The first level or two are very easy in comparison.

I still like Super Stardust HD better though.

Right now it seems to have a lot more quality titles available than both the PS4 and the Xbox One combined. Probably won't be until halfway through next year before we see some great PS 4 titles. I'm kind of looking forward to the enhanced Tomb Raider port, just so I can finally have a reason to play that damn thing. And the Super Turbo Edition of Guacamelee since that was one of the best games of the year.
I've been playing my Wii U way more than my PS4. Granted, the Wii U has had a year now to gain steam, but regardless, the PS4 launch window lineup has felt pretty weak. Oh well. 2014 will see things pick up. Considering Tomb Raider was one of my favourite games of 2013, I'm looking forward to the 'definite version' on the PS4.

I second this. Plus it's so damn pretty. It's the one game I've seen on these new generation of consoles that makes me go "wow, now this looks next gen".

It's pretty and does push the system the farthest any games does ATM but it really is a lifeless shooter when you pull away the touch pad and aesthetics.

Nah, I've enjoyed it a fair amount. It's not the amazing killer app or system seller people wanted it to be, but it's still a really enjoyable shooter (imo). Some levels are awesome and some are filler, but I never found it boring. Trying to stealth everything, disabling alarms and so on is exciting at times. Using your OWL for various perks is pretty novel as well.

I'm not really a big shooter fan, but I'll consider giving Killzone a try

I spent a few more hours playing Assassin's Creed Black Flag today and my god is that game good. It's the best thing I've played on the PS 4. Sad that the PS 4's best game is a last gen title. Still, I'm happy to be playing the best version of such a great game.

I'm still playing Contrast off and on again too, and it's managed to hold my interest so far, but I can easily see it becoming repetitive. I really enjoy the concepts and style of the game though.

I'll say it again, it's an awesome system. I just wish I didn't have to wait for some really awesome titles to start coming out for it. I look forward to seeing what the software line up will be like come this time next year.

You know it's a real shame Sony Japan didn't release Puppeteer on PS 4 rather than PS 3. Despite being from the same studio as Knack, it's a far better game. As a PS 4 launch title it would have received far more attention and sold much better than the poor sales it actually got. I really think it would have been a real, bright shiny spot in the system's launch line up and an exclusive worth picking up the system for because it's fresh and different. It's perfectly family friendly, fun, and accessible, the perfect game to enjoy on a new system with family

Missed opportunity on Sony's part

On another note, I finished Contrast and f**k the reviews it got. It's a good game

My younger cousins stayed for Christmas with my family. They had saved all their allowance and "gift money" over the year and were thinking of buying a PS3. In the end I convinced them that it's better for them to buy a PS4 since they are guaranteed to have new games to play on it for 5 more years, instead of the 2 they'd have on the PS3.

We went to the next big city closest to mine since they were sold out everywhere where I live (also found a 50€ bill on the train, which no one asked for, so yay :D). Anyway, we buy the console, come back, hook it up, I help them through setting up a profile and ect. (since their English is still not great), I touch the controller, I too think it's amazing to hold, and then we put Assasin's Creed 4 (my christmas gift for them) in and marvel at next-gen....and it's exactly like the previous generation.

I take them on PSN to download some demos, but there is only a demo for FIFA (which really doesn't look next-gen) Lego Marvel Heroes and....pinball....

so yeah, for the entire week they stayed at my house, my PS3 wouldn't stop working since they were playing GTA V on it, and their PS4 collected some wonderful dust....though I guess it did get used like 4 times....we also used it to watch scott pilgrim.

Don't buy a console at launch if you want the games NOW. Everybody knows it, but I still get really disappointed when I do bite in and end up with nothing to play for months. This of course doesn't mean anything about the console's long term potential, since the last console I was THIS disappointed with at launch was the DS, and we all know how that turned out :D

ACIV is supposed to be 1080p native after a patch, which the previous gen (and Xbox One) are not. Did that not do much? Was it at least 10% better?

Hard to warrant a PS4 over a PS3 for someone who has neither though, if they haven't played much of the previous generation. Scores of great games out there for cheap.

Is the PS4 region free, by the way?

I'm also interested in what possibility's there are for something like mods or user made maps on PS4. I know Bethesda said something along the lines of trying to allow for mods and such on future console versions of their games, so why not other companies? I don't know how well it would work on Xbone, due to Microsoft's limits on how much free DLC can be given, and that's why I'm questioning it here. I'd also be interested in cross platform play too, although balancing, especially if PC is brought in, would be horrific. (How could they do that fairly? Use auto aim, its unfair to PC players, take it away, and its unfair to console players...)
