mrs.redux wrote: Fun little game I played with Mr. Redux. Perfect for the Halloween season, Exmortis is available as a free download, point n click, that only takes about an hour-hour 1/2 to beat. You wake up in the woods and enter an old, creepy house for shelter and discover many murders have taken place. The object of the game is to collect all of the symbols left behind in the house that are written in blood before you confront the demon responsible for the murders. At the end of the game, you can choose from two different endings but you will have an opportunity to play the ending you did not choose once the game is over. The atmosphere is creepy and is best played with the lights dimmed. Overall, the game is pretty fun and entertaining, just plan on having to read some pretty lengthy journal entries and passages from the book of the dead in order to progress in the game.

Code of Princess - 3DS

If I could sum up Code of Princess in one word, it would be shallow. The combat is less skill based than Guardian Heroes. In fact, it all comes down to your stats. In the later stages of the game and in some of the bonus levels, the game tosses everything but the kitchen at you and you literally can't survive unless you level grind. Enemies will swarm you and air juggle the fuck out of you unless you can kill them quickly. During these times everything slows down at the 3DS can't handle the total clusterfuck of enemies that the game is throwing at you. Once you've powered up your character enough, you can just really just use one move over and over again to win, as each character has a move that gets pretty overpowered once their stats are high enough.

The story is cliche, fantasy anime fare. It tries to be funny, but after playing games like Lollipop Chainsaw and Double Dragon Neon, this game's attempts at humor just seem pathetic by comparison. It's humor for the Naruto crowd who just love anything anime no matter how mediocre.

The graphics are great and the music is nice, but the game is just so bland with its combat. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, The Dishwasher Vampire Smile and Castle Crashers are the gold standard beat 'em ups of this gen, and Code of Princess isn't even in their league. My personal score for this would be a six out of ten. I had way more fun playing Double Dragon Neon than I did with this uninspired game. Oh, and thumbs down for this game not including a Japanese language track. That's just lazy localization

I was really impressed with the animations and voice acting during cut scenes. The story is told very well. It's also not very common for an open world sandbox game to have such great melee combat.
I haven't finished the game yet, but I too am surprised by how good the combat is. It's challenging and satisfying. I love jumping into a group, grabbing a guy, bashing his head into an aquarium, picking up a giant fish, then using it like a baseball bat to send the other guys flying, followed by a running tackle and face pummeling.
People have been saying that combat in Sleeping Dogs is similar to the Batman games. Is this true? If it is, then I absolutely must play this game. Rocksteady's Batman games have my favorite combat system of any 3D beat 'em up game this gen.

Beat the other ending for Saint's Row: The Third. Previously, I beat the ending where you
save Shaundi and stop the monument from blowing up, but this time I went after Killbain. Now, I'm gonna go around and complete all the missions I neglected and pretty much cement my hold over Steelport.

Double Dragon Neon
Double Dragon the arcade game was the first game I ever quarter dropped to beat and then tried to beat it under $2. When I went on vacation as a kid we went to a fishing resort in Canada every summer and I would spend all day in the general store playing Double Dragon (later replaced by Golden Axe).
Double Dragon Neon was an awesome throwback to my personal experience in the 80's and the 80's itself. This game blended old school and new school play mechanics by being tough but allowing players to purchase upgrades. This game is one of the most fun games I have played in a while because of both the gameplay and atmosphere.

The Walking Dead Episode 2 and 3
After playing the first episode I said that it blended the comic and TV show perfectly and these two episodes didn't sway that opinion. The second Episode as a little more action and creepy orientated while the the third one worked as a great transition to the move to the city. The second episode reminded me what the world of this game is like, creepy and desperate, while the third one reminded me that the main characters do have a final goal and hope for survival.

TMNT
I love TMNT, all incarnations, and I love Beat-em up games. Most of the time TMNT games are beat-em up games and this one is no different. I purchased this game back in the day because of an article on Hidden Gem list and after beating Double Dragon Neon I had an itch for another beat-em up game.
TMNT could be played as a simple two button masher or if you take your time you can master awesome combos. While the game is based on the movie, I ignored the story and just focused on the solid and very fun gameplay.

I've only played Batman: Arkham Asylum for an hour or two and that was months ago, but from what I remember of it, I would say that Sleeping Dogs is pretty similar. I always meant to get back into the Batman games, but I uninstalled it for something else I needed the memory space for and I keep meaning to go back. Given your love for Beat em ups, I think you will really like the gameplay in Sleeping Dogs. It really nails the feel of what a beatemup should be. There are solid combos, satisfying mix of power and speed, lots of variety and ways to use the environment. Its one downfall, in my opinion, is that you rarely fight your way through a long stretch of territory in the typical brawl-move-forward-brawl setup of a traditional beatemup like Double Dragon or Final Fight. Sleeping Dogs puts you in the middle of a big brawl, then turns you loose on the open world where you might not fight again for awhile. They all feel like bite-sized battles. It's appropriate for the storyline, but it makes the gameplay feel a little choppy, like you never truly get to dig your teeth in before you have to jump to the next thing.

I've put about two or three hours into it. It's not quite as good as the Batman games. They're slightly more fluid and smooth combatwise, but I'm starting to enjoy it regardless. The environmental kills are sick! Just the fact that people are trying to copy the Batman combat style makes me happy and it's rather nice to see a Hong Kong movie take on it since I love those. It brings me great joy as well to see a GTA style game not focus so heavily on gunplay. Bout time someone brought a more beat 'em up feel to these open world games.

What's surprising me is some of the other gameplay elements that are done so well. I like the chase sequences(both on foot and in cars), ramming cars off the road is fun, and the simple map guidance system is nicely done. The story is pulling me in too. One thing bugging me though is how wonky the camera is if you try to manually control it while driving.

Overall though, I like the direction of the game so far. I've got a good feeling about Sleeping Dogs.

You should try the Batman games. They don't have quite the awesome, over the top environmental kills of Sleeping Dogs, but the combat is a bit faster and more fluid than Sleeping Dogs (based on what I've played of Sleeping Dogs so far)and the combat challenge rooms address your complaint about combat not lasting long enough in Sleeping Dogs. Plus, Arkham City lets you play around with gadgets in combat.

I just beat the NES version of super mario bros, I can't describe how good it feels, no cheats, no save states, no unlimited 1up's just sheer will, skill and luck (the Hold A and press start to continue was handy but it still meant playing world 8 all the way through over and over and over).
I must have spent at least 3 hours on world 8, stuff of nightmares.

9/3 Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins (Gameboy)
9/4 Kirby's Dreamland (Gameboy)
9/6 Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (Gameboy)
10/14 NiGHTS into Dreams HD (PSN)

NiGHTS is the reason I first got a Saturn. Of all of Sega's franchises, it's the one that I think has been the most unfairly ignored. This remake was very, very well handled.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I think everything that can be said about it has been said, I love it to bits and making my way through PT2 at the moment,

Dead Nation - PSN
I enjoyed this, but at times it just felt like a run of the mill twin stick, however once I started it again with a mate it became much more enjoyable.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - PC
I enjoyed it. But that's about it, I think it feels clunky most of the time. I feel like it is one of the more overrated games in recent memory.
