Microsoft won't leave the console bussiness even if there's no bussiness to be had in it.

The difference here is that Microsoft doesn't care. They have other things making them money. They were willing to take a loss to break into the industry with the original Xbox, they probably are willing to take a loss to stay in it.

They also bled themselves with the Xbox360 replacements. But they don't care. They are in it for the long run. They can outspend every single one of their competitors.

I don't think it will fail.

Fanboys are already jumping through hoops to defend this thing.

80% of Xbox 360 gamers are playing COD/Madden/Halo/GoW exclusively. They will buy the Xbone (I hate having my name associated with this POS) to continue to play the new installments.

Retro gamers hate it, but we are a small minority. Microsoft does not give a shit.

This is getting slammed everywhere, not just in retro gaming circles. It's also making far bigger waves than any other DRM related controversy I can remember.

It's way, way too early to dismiss MS or anyone else on the basis of anti-consumer tactics. Mostly because if the thing fails to sell due to a negative reaction (though it likely won't), MS can just patch those "features" out. Granted, MS has hubris in spades these days, and probably wouldn't...but they could.

Beyond that, remember, the Steambox is coming.

I don't think Android/iOS will formally compete as a console, much like the PC hasn't really. However, I think long term, it will be similar to that, and be capable of 360/PS3 level stuff within a few more generations. They'll make a dedicated console a lot more of an enthusiast purchase again.

Yeah, it'll launch with Half Life 3.

Re: All the doomsday scenarios about xbone DRM confirmed

I haven't been a PC gamer for 10+ years and maybe I'm just not seeing the big picture, but my console being persistently only or at least checking in once a day doesn't really bother me. Honestly I leave my 360 on for hours at a time anyways. Again don't hurt me, I just don't think in and of itself it's a problem.

My two big worries though are these:

1. Diablo/Sim City-esque problems, just different. They mentioned something about games being able to update automatically due to the persistent online. My thing is how bare bones are games anymore? Especially fighting games and such? Sports is really the only genre left where you have a robust selection of modes and things to do. Anyways, my point is console developers half ass most of their releases. If they can update a week or month after release I think they'll half ass them even more. They could get lazier with testing too. If they know they can fix a bug quickly after it's found they might be less inclined to find them in the first place.

2. They mentioned something about games with persistent worlds now being possible. If I had any faith developers would actually take advantage of this I'd be positively thrilled. I don't though. The last 2-3 generations, for me, have been rife with missed opportunities for developers that are focused more on the quick cash in these days rather than producing a meaty, lengthy gameplay experience.
