Everybody always likes to say what a great place Southern California is to live. I have to say about the only thing nice here is the weather. I am about ready to move out of here as well.
Traffic sucks no matter when or where you are going. Home prices and rents are extremely expensive and not looking to get much better despite the economic outlook. The price of groceries and gas seem to be more expensive here than any other place where I know somebody that can help me compare. Well maybe not NYC...
Good luck in finding a place that suits you, but the grass is always going to look greener until you get there.
So if I were to leave kansas...

I agree
Southern Cali's weather is fantastic. Loved it. That's about it.
THOUGH, if you're from a far wetter area, like me, it might be hell. I've lived in Southern Florida since 96' or so, so humidity is something my body found as a necessity. I didn't expect it to be that bad, but when I got to the dry desert that is LA some horrible things happened when acclimating.
When I did Yakima this occured as well, but not as bad as LA gave it to me. But I basically broke out in rash all over my body because I dried out so much. It was horrible! HORRIBLE! I say. It took 3 or 4 weeks to go away and then I was fully acclimated to the dry. After that it was amazing.
Some mates and I would be walking around and they'd be like "ugh, it's hot... oh man". I'd look at them and say, "Come back to my house in Florida... I dare you to sit in the living room on a nice 80 degree day with the AC off. Talk about HOT!" 90's in the desert is far more comfortable then 80's in Florida.

Hmm. I have a friend who's moving there tomorrow to be with his longtime girl. He has no job, so that doesn't sound promising.
