so nobody got that "Lords Of Shadow" was a joke in a response to Bone saying not to play PS3 games that you've been meaning to, huh?

One thing I do strongly agree with in Dave's wall of text: Don't play Lolo.

Gargoyle's Quest is a classic Game Boy game, despite what dsheinem declared when he came down the mountain. As a matter of fact, Nintendo themselves call it a classic game:

"This classic game is part of the Virtual Console service, which brings you great games created for consoles such as NES™, Super NES™ and Game Boy™ Advance."
- http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/dR ... 8eQAtCXdl1

So as entertaining as dsheinem's rants are, I'll still take Nintendo's opinion on this game's classic status over his.

Also Gargoyle's Quest is fucking awesome. Not playing it is dumb.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I never said I wasn't going to play it

If I take it off my summer list, I'll likely play it BEFORE I get to the summer challenge.

Doesn't Nintendo call pretty much every game on the VC a classic? Case in point: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/5j ... e-overview

Pretty sure that's just boilerplate stuff...

Ultimately I doubt all of us could come to an agreed consensus of what "classic" truly means, as defined within the world of video games. For example; you said Gargoyle's Quest has a "strong cult following", which in turn one could invoke the descriptor "cult classic", and thus validate Gargoyle's Quest as being a classic after all. Even if only in the cult sense.

I don't know what you've played but Final Fantasy and Ys come to immediate mind for being shorter games.
A sports title - I'm European so a lot of the American sports games have little interest to me. Although I have fond memories of NBA Jam on SNES. Otherwise its going to be a soccer or golf game. Tempting to go back and play one of the classic Championship Manager games but it would take my entire life and be of no interest to any of you... I find it odd that there seems to be no US equivalent of Football/Championship Manager series.
There are US sports management sim games. I don't really know much about soccer games though. Golf games rule though. You could do Golf/Mario Golf, Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf, PGA Tour, Links, Neo Turf Masters, Tiger Woods...

But um... let's see, how about California Games? That's kind of a left-field suggestion, I know.

Then what do you recommend as a classic action puzzle game, if not lolo?

Has your mom heard of any of these? Have my 18 year old students heard of any of these? Have most people outside of a retro forum heard of them? Have most people ON a retro forum heard of them? If the answer to two or more of those questions is no, drop it from your list as you don't need them: you have better choices.
Actually, my mom has.

Also, glad to see you've come to your senses and are now voting Republican.

I've not even played it; a lot of classic NES games slipped my notice because I was just too young. I do know the music is amazing, however, and your recommendation has piqued my interest! Maybe I'll buy just ooooone new game for the challenge this year...

(and so it begins)

<sigh>...DSH...DSH...<shakes head>...Misguided as usual...<reads list>...Wait a minute! I actually agree with you this year! (Even if your criteria for "classic" designation is completely arbitrary and far too restrictive)! Amazing!

Just kidding...RayStorm and Gargoyle's Quest are, IMO, indisputably classics. Vectorman probably is too, even if I can't get into it. Legacy of the Wizard is probably more of a cult classic - although it did recently make hardcoregaming101's controversial list of greatest games - and I am going to hold off on it until after I beat Romancia. Also, The Adventures of Lolo is a fun game, and people should play it (even if it isn't really a "classic" in the strictest sense).
