Update: I haven't beaten Castlevania IV 100% yet, but I think I've played far enough to develop an opinion.

Castlevania IV is a great Super Nintendo game, but I can't consider it as a great Castlevania game. It's every bit as challenging as a Castlevania game ought to be, while somehow cranking the frustration up and the fun down. Exhibit A: that stage with so many stone platforms endlessly scrolling upwards, like a series of evil elevators trying to crush you into the ceiling. My brother walked in at that part, commenting, "Wow, this looks really lame." and I had to agree. The bosses aren't as memorable to me, either. Rondo of Blood elicits memories of an evil painting trying to trap you inside it; Bloodlines reminds me of fighting a vicious gargoyle on top of a spire. Now in Castlevania IV I'm fighting a ghost couple who waltz around in the air while shooting ghost spears. I feel really bad for dissing Castlevania IV cause it's so full of 16-bit goodness, but I think my Sega Genesis fandom and Rondo of Blood have spoiled me.

CV4 has some pretty awesome bosses. How about the one in the first level? Some skeleton knight dude riding a skeleton dinosaur thing. Or in the level with the "evil elevators," that boss is pretty unique as well.

I always thought the "dancing couple" boss was pretty neat. It fits the level perfects, and the scrolling background during the fight is awesome. Also, it's not like Bloodlines didn't have some lame bosses. This one comes to mind. I feel like both games are their share of lame bosses, as well as memorable ones.

Also, it sounds like you haven't played the last level yet. I don't wanna spoil anything for you, but you might want to reform your opinion after finishing the game.

I actually really liked the dancing couple, as well as the treasure bat for some reason. They were unique ways to end those levels with thematically related bosses that I could appreciate.

Yeah so far I'm reminded a little of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Objectively it's a phenomenal game, but for some reason my brain won't let me enjoy it. If I were dating Castlevania IV it'd be kind of a "it's not you, it's me" thing.

He's even more lame if you know how his AI works and the fact that both characters have a way to hit enemies floating behind them.

You have to finish it. Game ramps hard in awesomeness towards the end. I beaten this game every year basically since it came out. Most of my play though is just to rerun through the last level. I get so pumped up at the approach to the end. Not too many action games legit make me smirk but oh man this gets me good at the end. You really should finish it.

My SNES is paused with the power on as I finish this, so, yeah, I'm finishing it. No need to worry about that. XD
