Because, when people say they want a new IP, they really mean they want an old IP done differently. They want another game re-imagined like Metroid Prime.

Do I feel that this game is going to be awesome? Most definitely! Will I get it? It is almost assured. Do I feel it will be a successful new IP? I want it to be, but I don't think it will.
Splatoon is also a new IP but it looks more visually appealing. I'm just real iffy on the art style that's all.

Maybe they will do like what they are doing with smash bros for the DS, allow a setting to thin the dark lines around the characters.

General_Norris put this really well. Splatoon looks very Japanese :D (meant in a good way).

I think Nintendo should risk more with new franchises. Remember how much money they made from Pokemon and Wii Sports? No matter how popular Mario is, he can't support a console on his own. And Zelda and Metroid and Starfox are hardcore favorites, but let's be honest they aren't moving consoles the same way Mario or Pokemon (when it comes to handhelds) are.

Well that is the thing. It doesn't have to be a new IP, but really it needs to be a good idea.

In a lot of interviews, Nintendo themselves say that they build games from an initial gameplay mechanic and then decide what characters would fit placing in that mechanic the most. An example of that is Captain Toad. I would consider that a new IP, even though it uses an established character as it is a completely different game that toad is not really affiliated with. Other games, like the new Yarn Yoshi (why didn't they keep that name?) still has the core yoshi gameplay mechanics and thus not a new IP.

I myself would put the Four Swords games in the new IP category as well in that aspect as it is a completely different game than zelda and the same for when Mario Party first came out.

It really boils down to the ideas however and if you can bring a brilliant idea to the forefront for the system it should sell, much like Nintendogs and Brain Age did for the DS in days of old. We will see though!

Hm. Well Captain Toad started as a mini-game in Super Mario World so it makes sense.

But Kirby's Epic Yarn actually started like a game without Kirby in it and they justed added him, which didn't make sense imo since the gameplay was way too different. That left a bad taste to me.

Same with Starfox Adventures. Dinosaur Planet could have been a better game.

I remember one of the treehouse guys asking about the urban style of the environments in Splatoon...

The first thing that came to my mind was Jet Set Radioooooo.

I hope it supports local play. Both 2 VS 2 and 4 people playing online together.

Too bad the franchise just came out, the squids would have made for some awesome Smash Bros characters :D

And dang it after watching the trailer for that again I just remembered that nintendo was putting out a ton of games that would be great to play especially with quite a few people over the next 2 holiday seasons(even if some are released before then) *sigh*
