This ship has sailed. If you are smart, from here out you'd always want to check the details of MUSHA or Earthbound (or similar) before buying it.
Yes, I have a game bit and I open any high value cartridge to make sure that "Nintendo" is silk-screened somewhere on the circuit board, and to verify that the solder looks like it's factory quality. Best $5 that I ever spent in this hobby.

Perhaps I come off a bit in this thread like the old guy who stays in a neighborhood after it goes downhill, and won't stop talking about the times when you could leave your door unlocked at night. End of the day though, my view is even if reproductions have already undermined the integrity of the market, it doesn't mean we should just give up on anti-proliferation measures.

We can agree to disagree on repros, but I think you'd agree with me that that's a positive thing about this forum.

This is where I still have a problem, I can not tell the difference in the label or artwork in Genesis cases. They may have been different in design when the first person had them but what about the next person. And with case artwork adding $100 to the total cost how can I not be paranoid about it when some one can print it for $5. Some one could buy a legit beat-up MUSHA, slap a new label on and print some artwork and turn $75 into $200.

God this thread was worth it just for some of the new sig quotes I've seen spawned if nothing else.

For what it's worth, I'm also in the minority it seems -- I voted #5. I'm totally fine with repros that you couldn't get in a given region (JP, EU in US-style shells and vice versa, with or without translation) or for entirely new homebrew/hacks, but I'm against repros for the sake of repros. That's what flash carts are for, imo. To me, a repro of a cart where you're changing nothing and essentially doing nothing except making it cheaper to acquire is just a bootleg.

But hey. My collection is so broad at this point that I'm unlikely to get into the expensive games for any system any time soon. When there's so many good games to be had sub 20 bucks, legitimately, I don't need to be looking at the $100+ and worrying about getting faked out.

Yet.

Chronically out of date BST thread

I think for those of us who voted number 2 it's just such a non-issue we don't even bother arguing our case. But the people have spoken and I guess in a couple of days someone should start a poll on weather the repros should be labeled as such on the carts themselves or just in the sale thread.

Simple solution: Have a BST thread titled "Bootleg and Repro BST Thread" and let people know if they sell repros in another thread and are being deceptive, they are subject to a ban.

We could make a section for bootlegs, repros, custom products, and services or something like that would be interesting.

I totally dig custom projects, and find bootlegged items interesting. I've always wanted a fake Rolex only for the fact that's it's an obvious fake.

Here's a question for the repro people:

Are there any technical advantages to using a bootleg as opposed to a flashcart?

I'm legitimately curious. I don't dabble in bootlegs and see no reason to when there are flash carts available.. Is there something a repro can do that a flash cart can't?
