Also, electronic preorders are taken for the same reason any other kind of pre-order is taken, so folks can go ahead and pay for a copy of a work that interests them before its release. And any sort of production takes time, even for ebooks, so the book may well be written and even edited well before preo-orders begin while the publisher makes other decisions, such as formatting, production, etc., or deals with legal issues. The ebook could also be held back while waiting for the print version to finish production so they can be released simultaneously.
