I know next to nothing about the MSX. I guess I am not a good retro gamer. I think you are overestimating the number of western or at least US gamers are familiar with the MSX beyond acknowledging hearing the name...brunoafh wrote:It actually did have a fairly large global following, it just didn't really take off in the West. I don't know how many gamers know of MSX exclusives, but I would assume at least a good amount of retro gamers know that it birthed Metal Gear, Bomberman, and Aleste. It's not like it's some ultra obscure system. But I get the idea he wouldn't know any of this, as he doesn't even know that it's not a console. Which isn't a big deal generally, but it makes you lose credibility if you're acting like an expert and making giant game analysis videos.AppleQueso wrote:MSX2 was huge in Japan, sure, but is pretty small if we're talking globally, and it's virtually unknown outside of specific gaming circles. Seriously, how many gamers, even among retro forums, can even name you any MSX exclusives besides the Metal Gears?
It was not my intent to be condescending if that's what you're getting at, I just wasn't impressed by the video.if that makes me dumber than a 15 year old then oh well

I don't really know much at all about Aleste. I was going to say that I didn't even know that Bomberman was birthed on the MSX, but then I thought about it a bit more and remembered that I did know that the first game came out on Japanese computers, and I guess that would've had to have been the MSX.
I do see stuff like the Commodore 64 occasionally referred to as a "console," which may be what is going on here. Could also just be a slip or just using the word "console" in place of something like "platform," or you could be right and he could simply not know much at all about the MSX. I don't really think it matters all that much in the context of the video though.

It doesn't mean you are not a good retro gamer. It means you are not a good candidate to talk about stuff related to the MSX on youtube.Jmustang1968 wrote:I know next to nothing about the MSX. I guess I am not a good retro gamer.
God damn it, now I'm tempted to watch his videos about the MSX games and see what he says.

Re: Classic Game Room Leaving YouTube
This is daft. Even if you don't personally like the reviews or personalities on youtube, surely you wouldn't want to see a blanket ban on user content? I sometimes prefer them over written reviews because most don't boil things down to an arbitrary metric at the end.
My problem is that most of these videos are just free advertising for publishers anyway. Love him or loathe him Pewdiepie has probably bunked up the sales of a few games that would have never received such a wide audience.

There sure is a fuckton of "stop liking things that I don't like" and people willfully ignorant of the effort that goes into doing things that they've never done before going on in this thread.
Making a decent review video isn't just recording the first 5 minutes of the game and rambling unprepared in front of the camera, mixing those together and clicking upload any more than making a business presentation is just you "standing in front of people with crap spread on a table" or building a deck is just "nailing some boards together".
Lets plays are useful to see what the game looks like whether they have commentary or not. Sometimes I'll be on the fence whether I want to check out a game and I'll look for a video properly labeled as a "let's play" so I can see some uninterrupted footage which will tell me if a game is bullet hell or too platformy and I need to stay away or if some action game includes loot dropping or something that interests me without it cutting footage every few seconds so I can see how the game flows.
