Try $8.50 an hour in the head photo lab position at walgreens. Assistant Managers get paid jack shit too and are required to have 2 years of college. Retail pays crap.

And after working in retail and the restaurant industry for multiple years, I can tell you that if minimum wage gets increased, the price of cookies will just get jacked up and they'll simply cut hours and make their employees do the work of more people. Just look at the checkout of your local retail store. How many of the 20 lanes at target are actually open? Maybe 1 on each end. Go to a smaller place like walgreens or CVS and there's probably nobody there at all because that employee also has to cover the photo lab, or wander the store stocking shelves or putting up pricing stickers. Prices go up, service gets crappier, people do more work, ceo's get bonuses.

This is why I don't shop in stores anymore.

They refused to say what the paying wage was until I attended orientation. There were about 10 new hires at orientation. At the end of the meeting, they handed out tiny, folded slips of paper that had our wage printed on it. It was ridiculous.

I couldn't believe how little they were paying me. I was literally offended. I worked for one day then quit.
Did they make you watch anti-union videos during orientation? That's what they did here in the States (okay, at least they did it in Maine).

I remember when the first video started this teenage girl turned to me and said, "Unions?! Isn't that what they have over in Red China?"

That quote is great.

Personally, I think unions have their place, but do just as much harm as good. Seeing my Uncle and Cousin going 2-3 years at a time without working or getting paid because of contract arguments and such make me less of a fan than I probably should be.

Today there was two girls making out in the front of the store. Just sitting in front of the kiddie area, making out. With a lot of people staring at them. I'm not sure why, but it seemed so odd at the time, although not so much in retrospect.

I would have had low expectations for retail pay, except I worked at the Home Depot across the street from the Walmart for $2 more an hour than Walmart offered.

I work for Wal-Mart in the Logistics division. The pay is actually pretty good, and I only work Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Plus benefits, vacation time, and so on. I'm just a regular hourly associate.

I'm also treated better by the management there than I have been at any other job I have ever had.

I've always figured the folks in the non store sectors of the company were probably paid a bit better, but eh.

I can't really complain about my job. Some of my co-workers are a bit annoying and there's a couple of grating managers, but it's a steady paycheck that provides a living wage in my area. I've put up with it for nearly 4 years now, after all.
