Re: Aspirational Gaming Goals for 2013

Post by J_Wil »

My gaming goal in the beginning of the year was to reach 1,000 physical copy games by the end of the year (started with a round 800) and I have far surpassed that.

On a related note, I'm working on the goal to stop impulse buying every cheap game I come across.

A more focused goal would be to bring up my TG 16 collection. I only have 7 games (I just broke out the ol' Turbo Duo tonight after about 10 years of collecting dust and I'm struggling with the idea of cracking open my sealed copy of Blazing Lazers). I missed out on the TG 16 as a kid and got one and a Turbo Duo about 10 years ago but never really put any money into buying games for them. I'd like to get 5-10 quality games by the end of the year.

I also need to sell/trade off all my extra systems and game doubles. That would certainly help fund a respectable collection.
"Oh great, another box of useless sh*t."

Guess I'll note my progress so far too.

-Try to beat enough games to make me look cool on Racketboy.

I haven't completed nearly as much as I'd like to have. I work too damn much these days.

-Keep playing Wii Fit Plus, and try to lose like 30 lbs overall.

Despite how much I enjoy the game, I haven't been keeping up with Wii Fit Plus, but I have been walking a lot more lately and making healthier eating choices. I wouldn't say that I've lost 30 lbs yet but I have been told by some that I appear thinner. Oh well, not like I was anywhere near obese in the first place. Still going to try to keep losing weight however.

-Finish GCN collection.

I haven't collected all of the GCN games I want, there's about 5 or so left, but I've gotten most of the big targets out of the way already - including Cubivore.

-Buy some more Wii games. I love that console.

Still love that console. Pretty sure I expanded my Wii collection a bit this year, but nothing substantial. Still, glad to see I pretty much met this goall.

-Flesh out PS3 collection.

I've definitely fleshed out the PS3 collection. Now I have nearly as much unplayed PS3 crap as I do for any other system. The console's just one of the gang now, lol.

3/4 through the year. How is it going guys?
Gaming
- Try to get 3 or less unfinished games per system on my backloggery by my birthday (December 24th).
Not going well still. 10 games to go still - 5 on Wii, and one each on SNES, PS2, PS1, Game Gear and Neo Geo Pocket Colour

- Beat at least 2 Final Fantasy games in my collection.
Nope. Currently playing through FFVII right now, but I'm incredibly doubtful I'll beat another one by Christmas. On the other hand, I replayed FFV over the summer, so maybe that kinda counts?

- Beat 50% or more Together Retro games out of the months I participate in.
Played Bubble Bobble and Fantastic Dizzy, beat both. Played Zork, didn't finish it. Was hoping to join in on the last 3 months of the year (Zombies, Parappa and Lemmings), but I don't have the games right now, so we'll see.

- Beat a game on every console I own.
So far: 3DS, DS, GBC, GB, Wii U, Wii, N64, PSP, PS1, Master System, PC. Still to go: GBA, Pokemon Mini, Virtual Boy, Gamecube, SNES, NES, Dreamcast, Saturn, Mega Drive, Game Gear, PS2, NGPC, TG16, XBox, 3DO. 11 down, 15 to go. Not even half way through >_<

- Beat at least half of the games left on my Games Not Beaten 2012 list at the end of December 2012.
Beaten:FF Tactics: War of the Lions, Paper Mario 3DS, Mario Tennis Open, NSMB2, Loco Roco, Metroid Prime 3. Not Beaten: Catrap, Pokemon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire. Sold: Scribblenauts. I'd finished this goal by June's update, but added Prime 3 to the beaten list now too. Possibly my one successful goal this year.

Collecting
- Limit myself to 3 new games per month maximum - with exceptions: If I buy a new system that comes bundled with games, they don't count to that months total, and games bought for Together Retro don't count either. The idea here is to make myself buy the games I really want that may cost a little more, by buying less random crap!
Well, I only bought one game this month. Honestly, I'm doing OK here - I'm buying slightly more than 3 on average, but a lot are just Wii U versions of VC games I had on Wii anyhow.

- Buy at least 1 game for each system I didn't buy a game for this year (Gamecube, Saturn, 3DO, NGPC, Turbografx, Pokémon Mini, Virtual Boy)
Progress: I bought me a Turbografx game (Somer Assault)! Unfortunately, that's still it, and I don't think I'm likely to pick up anything for the other systems either.

- Focus more on handheld games over console purchases (50% or more handheld for new purchases in 2013)
I'd have to add up the numbers to work it out, but I've bought a reasonable number of new games for DS and 3DS at least this year.

- Buy a Wii U
Another successful mission at least

Last month - time to cram!

updated:

dsheinem wrote:Goals for 2013:

Playing:
1. Shoot for a closer to 50/50 ratio for retro/current gen games beaten

2. Grab the top spot on the leaderboard for one month of SOTM
no
3. Play co-op through a game from start to finish with my preschooler
yes. Final Fight.
4. Beat a Virtua Boy game (without losing vision)
no

Collecting:
1. Finish a complete Atari 7800 collection.
yes
2. Explore the world of Mega Drive imports a little, picking up some solid Japanese exclusives.
no
3. Do a long-overdue collection update on RFGen and then keep it current month to month.
no

I could still do the last one in each category this month if I were so inclined. Otherwise, I don't know that I will hit these other goals or that I still care to.

How are others doing?

Yeah let's tally this up

AppleQueso wrote:most of my goals here are kinda rambling, probably won't hit all of these but I'm definitely gonna try:

Libraries:
-build up the collections of my most currently neglected systems. I have only a handful of games for Game Boy (currently only 5 GB, 2 GBC, and 4 GBA), Turbo Grafx (6), and Sega Master System (7) right now and want to build those up.
Nope.
-To a lesser extent, I'd like to build up my Atari 2600 (13), Saturn (11) and Dreamcast (10) collections as well.
I got like 1 Saturn game and 1 2600 game.
-Most of the popular Wii titles should start really dropping in price soon, so I'd like to jump on that and built up a better Wii library while the prices are good.
The big Nintendo games didn't quite drop as fast as I was hoping. Oh well, maybe next year?

Hardware
-Get a new Sega CD and built a modest library for that. I briefly had one, but got rid of it for some reason.
Definitely did well on this. Even managed to get a model 1, which I kinda prefer aesthetically (I have a model 1 Genesis). Happy with my small library too.

-Hori Gamecube GBPlayer controller.
-Get a pong console. Maybe a Telstar or something.
-Get more second generation consoles and built up some modest libraries for them. Colecovision, Intelllivision, Odyssey2, Vectrex, whatever.
-Virtual Boy, perhaps?
-Master System Light Phaser. How else am I going to play Safari Hunt and Rescue Mission?
-More N64 controllers. I only have one!
Other than the pong console, none of these panned out

Misc
-Continue doing what I've been doing with building up the Nintendo side of my library.
Kinda did okay on this.
-Finish getting the first two or three years or so of Nintendo Power.
Dropped the ball on this one.
-Try and finish re-building my childhood Game Boy, N64, SNES, and NES libraries. I'm pretty close to this one.
Got back some of the pricier SNES games I needed, so that's a plus.
-Work more on my NES game. See if I can get the engine solidly built and maybe some test levels and a solid design document put together.
lol fuck no. Would still like to get back to work on it though
-See more games that I start through to the end. I'm not concerned too much about backlogs, but I'd like to actually regularly finish the games I start.
I didn't really seriously start all that many games, but I did manage to finish most of the ones I did, so uh... success?

Well that was mostly a bust, but some positive stuff game through I guess.

I don't see any of it changing before the year's end.

December update.
samsonlonghair wrote:Speaking of bonified emulation machine, my girl got me a wii for Christmas. So, my goal for 2013 is to softmod this bad boy, buy a component cable, buy a few arcade sticks, and hit the emulation fast and furious!

Softmod... √Check!
Component cable... √Check!
Arcade stick... √Check!
Emulation... X lost interest.
I am enjoying playing all these amazing wii games for dirt cheap. I haven't run a single emulator.

Got to beat loads of Wii and PS2 games, and a fair few for other systems too. Not happening.

- Beat at least 2 Final Fantasy games in my collection.
Nope. Don't even know if I'll manage FFVII, which would be my first new FF game beaten this year

- Beat 50% or more Together Retro games out of the months I participate in.
Played Bubble Bobble, Fantastic Dizzy, Zork & Parappa, finished 3 of them. Next year I plan to join in more.

Started off reasonably well, fell apart last month.

- Continue working on my N64 collection. I must have every good game CIB!
Didn't add even one game to the collection
- Same as above, but for oXbox.
At least I bought an Xbox game this year
- Catch up on all the Xbox 360 stuff I've missed out on over the past few years.
Uhh... does the first half of Halo 4 and buying but not playing Bully count?

This year was a complete failure as far as these goals go. Almost all of my gaming was on PC.

I can't really remember how many I started off with, but I did add a few gems to my collection. I hope to acquire even more in the upcoming year. I did also add a few Sega CD games, but not sure that counts.

Get either a Wii or DS this year.

Got both!

Get more Nintendo Power mags.

Haven't got a complete set, but I did acquire many more than I had.

So collecting goals: complete!

Playing goals:

Play every SOTM month.
Play every TR month (except January when I'm super busy).
Get through at least 2 PS1 RPGs and 2 SNES RPGs.

Between marriage, honeymoon, moving, teaching obligations, conference planning, student obligations, conference papers being written, I have had no time at all this year. Definitely dropped the ball on these.

Didn't happen. Either of them.

Well, I mean, I have been playing my WiiU more than any console I have had in the last 5 years so maybe that counts.
