I've only done it co-op, but I'd imagine Serious Sam BFE would probably scratch that itch. Unfortunately, the current climate is such that the old school arena shooter deathmatch isn't popular, while the military shooter is. But this sort of thing tends to go in cycles.

All the games that came with HL2 (later on) are great. Counter Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source and Half Life 2 Deathmatch. Pretty much no one actually plays HL2DM (which is a shame), but it's really fast paced and hectic.

How surprising that the sequel has similiar gameplay mechanics as the original game. If Human Revolution had been a new IP, the chances are that it wouldn't have been as good as it was.
Since I'm playing all the wrong games, do tell me, where can I find a game like System Shock 2 these days? Bioshock and Dead Space, both of which try to be System Shock's "spiritual successor", are very simplified compared to the System Shock games.

I'll give you that modern "military simulator" type of realistic PC FPS games aren't dumbed down or bad, but it's a very small niche genre compared to the Battlefield 3/Call of Duty/Gears of War type of console FPS games that currently dominate the market.

I'm hopeful about Xcom and Dishonored, but neither of those games are catering to modern gamers. Xcom will hopefully do the same thing Human Revolution did (revive an old series, the last decent Xcom game was released back in 1998), and Dishonored tries to be a spiritual succesor of Thief and Deus Ex.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I hope you're talking about X-COM: Enemy Unknown, which is the awesome looking turn-based strategy game that's a true successor to the original X-COM being made by Firaxis, and not that horrible looking FPS.

I can assure you the FPS will get tens our of ten from every major gaming website and ten out of ten blowjobs from IGN.

I didn't remember Serious Sam, I haven't palyed the original yet, which perhaps I should but TF2 consumes so much of my FPS time it's hard for me to play anything else. I also kind of lumped HL2 and its mods together, probably because they were remakes.

The shame is that the only people who play HL2DM now are cheaters :(

I dabbed into some UT, but never had a good PC growing up myself. Kind of sad I missed out on the arena styled shooters.

I'm big on the Battlefield / Bad Company stuff though. CoD/Halo, not so much, I like bigger maps. Small maps would be fine with faster paced arena styled action and platforming crazy bananas. Halo bores me with power weapons and CoD is killstreaks, meh!

Oh and that "other" X-Com game might be third person now. Not that it changes much.

Quake Live?
Hawken?
Alien Arena?
Left 4 Dead 2?
Tribes Ascend?
Borderlands 1 or 2?
Monday Night Combat?
E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy?

Just some potential candidates worth investigating.

4.5 from GS. quote]

Gamespot has always been a bit suspect for me. When everyone scored Shenmue with 10/10s, Gamespot gave it a 7.8. When everyone scored Skyward Sword with 10/10s, Gamespot gave it a 7.5. Now I know them games are flawed but for their time, they are some of the greatest experiences. I'm probably in the minority here, but I didn't care for Resident Evil until Resident Evil 4, which is one of my favourite games ever, I still play it regularly. Resident Evil 5 I enjoyed but it was more action-based than even Gears of War. It was too cartoonish with Chris punching boulders with huge muscles. But at least it was playable. I won't be playing Resident Evil 6, mainly as I only have a Wii at the moment!

Even a 7.8 for Shenmue is overly generous.

Shenmue is perfect. 11/10. (yeah, it breaks the scale.)

I do wonder if the gaming press has something against Capcom.

Now, I haven't played RE6, so I can't comment on it.

But the reviewers weren't too enthusiastic about Dragon's Dogma and I thought that game was absolutely fantastic.
