As a kid, I never got really far into this game. I don't believe I ever got to the fourth world.
Today, after cleaning my nes, I played it a bit and I made it to the fifth world.

Note : Before reading this thread, I had no idea toad was picking-up stuff faster.
I thought he didn't have any advantages over the other characters.

I got up to Wart and ran out of lives before successfully damaging him. But now I know what to do!

He also runs faster than anyone else.

So I am not sure I've ever played more than the first few levels of this game. I just beat Super Mario 3D Land, so I think I'm up for more Mario action. I'll jump in this week.

As a kid, I read the manual over and over. I used to carry it around with me at school! I loved the art. The manual also details the differences between the characters.

I played this one on the GBA back in 2007, a few months after (finally) playing the first Super Mario Bros. game (All Stars version). Real quality game, hadn't played it before.

play the NES version so you can comment on difference in difficulty.

I agree with noise. I kinda want to purchase the GBA version for the GB player just for fun.

I mentioned game themed quilts in the off-topic thread. I think the opening/big drop in smb.2 could make for a sweet design. I also love the design of the warp rocket and the first Mouser fight, so it's a tough call.

Playing with the GBA version with a GB Player is great. Even though I commented earlier about kind of wishing I had the NES version, Super Mario Advance adds a lot.

All right, I beat Wart! He was pretty easy the second time around - I finished the game with 11 extra lives.

My final character-use stats are
Mario - 5
Luigi - 1
Toad - 1
Princess - 13

And even though I don't think anyone cares about score (I think it was only in Super Mario Advance) I ended the game with 870,170. And I didn't get all the coins.

I got the Yoshi eggs from 1-1 but I don't know if I'm actually going to bother going through and getting all of them. We'll see how my patience holds up!

Back when I played, I did get 100 coins in the GBA version. Were the coins not in the original?

The "Ace" coins are exclusive to Super Mario Advance. That is why I liked playing this after playing the NES original. There's a lot more.
