Re: Zelda isnt an rpg?
Lol, so a game is an rpg based on perpective, and now Metroid is a platformer, and Zelda an rpg, purely based on perspective? What platforming is in Metroid??
I'm sorry, I thought there was some kind of intelligent discussion going on, but I was obviously wrong.
I'm just gonna go play some Banjo Kazooie RPG

The problem is that second declension Latin nouns and 1/2 adjectives in the masculine ending in -us in the nominative have the plural in -i (thus, e.g. servus to servi, bonus to boni). However, neither status nor octopus (nor any Latin noun ending in -is) are second declension. The plural of status in Latin is statūs, which is proper in British English, although in America we add our Anglicized plural ending -es to the end. Likewise, the Greek ending for octopus or platypus is to change the pus (from Greek pous, foot) to podes. There is yet another noun in Latin ending in -us, which is in the third declension and neuter. Words like opus change their stem and because it's neuter, ends in -a, thus opus becomes opera. But in no way can it ever be statii.
Honestly I didn't expect to run into such a brilliant argument on a gaming forum. Consider myself corrected. So I take it that you deal in English based linguistics?

Re: Zelda isnt an rpg?
To me though, the jumping in metroid is just jumping.
Nothing like Megaman, where you have time-based jumps that directly relate to your success or failure.
I did a shitload of killing, exploring, puzzle-solving, AND jumping in Link's Awakening, but to me its still easy to see that the defining elements are action, and adventure.
When platforming = jumping, and character growth = rpg, there is basically no reason to even define genres.
To completely dismiss Metroid's uncanny similarities in genre to Zelda based entirely on their perspective though? At that point, I feel the OP is just trying to get agreement, not discussion.

I guess it depends on what metroid you think everyones talking about.

I think zelda is 50% action rpg, I understand the character doesnt gain stats, but he does get sheild upgrades. in a link to the past. and illusions of gai you gain exp. you can earn continues, and you def, and attack go up, one think zelda a link to the past is missing, and all the other zeldas.

Fair enough I suppose.
Like I said, I get what you're saying. I don't disagree.

You get shield upgrades in everyyything.
Gradius has damn shield and power upgrades.
You get shields in sonic.
Wonder Boy is certainly no rpg, yet you get permanent weap/shield upgrads.
I don't see how a game defined as action cannot have shield upgrades, so therefore must have "rpg" attached to it.

Ha ha. I see where you are going with that.
To me, Cannon Spike is an Arena Shoiter like Robotron and Geo Wars.
Some games really bend the genre boundries, and shmups are always up for debate.
However, I've played a ton of rpgs, both turn-based and action, and I've played a lot of hack n slash.
It seems pretty blatant to me that Zelda is a hack n slash, built for homeplay, unlile most action games at the time which were arcade games (at least the ones Id played). Therefore, it could be more open-ended, allow saves, and permanent upgrades.
Purely based on gameplay, the game does not play like an action rpg. It plays like an overhead action game
Cannon Spike plays like Cannon Spike. Its hard to put a finger on the genre, with the closeup attacks and such.

You get shield upgrades in Metroid games, Devil May Cry and God of War (technically), Doom, Quake and a shit-ton of other games. Even Mario games have shield upgrades in the form of suits/power-ups.
