Yes it was. If it was a decent rotation, like Contra III, it might not have been so bad, but if I recall correctly, the rotation was fixed at 90 degree angles.Inazuma wrote:Isn't Brandish the one that rotates the view around like a mother fucker every time you change direction? If so, I agree in calling it a mutilated unplayable mess.

Fortunately, they're breakable. The next time I play all the way through one I'll just beat the campaign normally and then monster farm for post game completion. You can get a level 9000 ally in a few hours by doing this.BoneSnapDeez wrote:As someone who only has time to play games 1-1.5 hours a day, Disgaea would be way too much of a time sink for me. Decent games, I just can't finish them.

Oh trust me, the rotating environment in Brandish is much worse than the one in Contra III (which, admittedly, is also quite awkward. Hard Corps FTW). Basically your character can only walk up and backwards in a vertical "strip" area down the center of the screen. Right and left rotate the room around him. It's a disaster.

I wouldn't go THAT far. It's still workable, but it is an acquired taste. Like brussel sprouts, Okra or durian.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Oh trust me, the rotating environment in Brandish is much worse than the one in Contra III (which, admittedly, is also quite awkward. My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

Huh, I've always loved brussel sprouts since the moment I tried them.pakopako wrote:I wouldn't go THAT far. It's still workable, but it is an acquired taste. Older. Not wiser.

Sea urchin, on the other hand, was definitely an acquired taste. It must have taken at least 5 times for it to taste good to me. Caviar aside, it is my favorite food. I'm so glad my parents kept encouraging me to try it.

To continue from my first listing...
Before I start, take it up with Mobygames if you don't think some of these games should be considered RPGs.
---Saturn---
Virtual Hydlide
The Saturn only had a handful of RPGs, but most of them were really enjoyable. The only redeeming factor of Virtual Hydlide is the opening cut scene, and the fact that it only took about 10 hours of my life.
---Genesis---
Battlemaster
Exile/Ys 3
Fatal Labyrinth
Super Hydlide
Honorable Mentions: Traysia, Sorcerer's Kingdom, King's Bounty
Battlemaster, this game is bad. Poor controls, poor game play, poor game. Play the game for five minutes and you will agree. Exile and Ys 3 are the same type of game as each other: just boring side scrolling ARPGs. They were not unique and they were below average on the fun scale. I know I was "defending" Super Hydlide in a previous post, but this game was really just bad, even though it tried hard to be innovative. I appreciate that fact, but the game can easily be skipped. Just knowing how the final boss must be defeated will have you laughing at this game.
For the honorable mentions I have Traysia and Sorcerer's Kingdom. While not "bad", they offered nothing new and are completely forgettable (I don't remember much, if anything, from either of these games). King's Bounty (and I know people will disagree with me here) seemed very clunky and hard to enjoy. Perhaps it was just the Genesis port, but I did not find this fun. I know it was the precursor to the Heroes of Might and Magic series, so that's why it was "upgraded" to honorable mentions.
---DC---
Seventh Cross Evolution
This game just feels unfinished. The only reason to play this game is to see the final video of the "perfect ending".
Edit: added DC list

Durian isn't so bad. It's the smell. The smell!pakopako wrote:I wouldn't go THAT far. It's still workable, but it is an acquired taste. Re: Is any RPG truly Bad?
Y's III??!?? Oh no he didn't!
I like my RPG platformers and this was great to me (SNES version anyways).
Exile was... okay, but I also gave it away right after beating it.
Fatal Labyrinth is pretty basic and doesn't do anything special, but I already stated my lack of trust for opinions on rogue-likes. And this was one of (if not THE) the earliest examples for a console. I say it's not terrible, good for an occasional run.
Battlemaster... no argument there. I really wanted to like it too. But I just couldn't stand how clumsy moving and attacking with my small party was.
I want to play Sorcerer's Kingdom again before I make a call on it. I think I liked it, but got totally pissed at a battle that I considered not winnable.
