No, but if they had electric heating and artificial shelter, they might. Those things aren't natural though, so clearly they could only have made things worse. I'll let you decide what would be worse for them than extinction. BTW, you're writing all this from a cave, using a naturally grown computer, right?

The point is, "natural" and "worked for millions of years" aren't meaningful or rational in a conversation about practical results. Neither is discussing the survival of whole species when discussing individual animals. Yes, species have survived for millions of years doing (x), but we can replace (x) with anything:

Deer have survived for millions of years getting eaten by wolves. There are even reasons to believe this is good for the overall genetic health of a wild deer population. Clearly then, the best way to care for an individual deer in a captive environment is to introduce it to a hungry wolf. That's what nature intended. Oh look, it died. Damn.

Cats have survived for millions of years without veterinary care. I guess the best thing for my next cat would be to leave her unspayed and unvaccinated, and never take her in for checkups or give her any remedies for illness or parasites. In five years, when all of her unwanted kittens have been euthanized by local animal control services, and she dies covered in fleas due to a preventable case of feline leukemia, I'll know I did what was best for her by keeping things as nature intended, instead of subjecting her to dangerous chemicals and vaccines, or cruelly removing the reproductive organs she was meant to have.

I could go on for pages with that little game, but the point is this: Sometimes something "natural" might be better than something "artificial" but sometimes the reverse is true. Either way, if one thing is better than another, there's a reason. Something isn't better simply because it's "natural" or because it's "artificial." You have to do some critical thinking and not just jump to the conclusion that what nature "intended" is always better. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.

Processed foods aren't bad because they're processed. To use your own useless argument, we've been processing food for millions of years: bread, stored grain, dried fruits and vegetables, salted meats, cooking with fire, etc. Not only has the species been fine, but we've been better for it. Cooking, processing, and preserving food has enabled us to survive famines and diseases that would otherwise have been fatal when raw natural foods failed us. Moreover, that we've been doing this is a direct result of the human animal's natural instinct to learn and to manipulate our environment to our own benefit.

I don't think it takes a whole lot of brain power to understand that the problems we have from modern processed food are because of our current tendency to make it out of pure garbage, and because our lazy modern lifestyle doesn't equip our bodies to deal with it. Plenty of fast-food is only minimally processed, but we have the same issues from that food--because they're simply poor eating choices for our modern lifestyle. On the other hand, you can find fairly thoroughly processed foods at whole foods stores that are more healthful because they use wholesome ingredients. Pet food is absolutely no different.

Oh, and FYI: My veterinarian friend's old cats and dogs don't suffer from any of the ailments raw feeders say they're supposed to have. They also have all of the benefits that supposedly can come only from raw feeding: unusually full and shiny coats, brighter eyes, more energy, firmer and less smelly stools, no tooth decay, and no obesity. Impossible! Or maybe it's because she keeps them active and feeds them kibble made of meat instead of kibble made of corn.

Sure, millions of years...

Agricultural revolution

Sure, much better...

What effect did the neolithic agricultural revolution have on people's lives?

Just a hunch.

Oh, and to address some comments from earlier:
But please continue giving them processed food. Afteral, the animals in the wild look much sicker than their domesticated counterparts.
Well, for starters, wild animals don't live long enough to develop degenerative illnesses. Wild animals certainly do get sick, but when they do, all you're likely to see is a carcass. Certainly not the best recommendation for natural living.
Ever seen an overweight leopard?... Yup, in the zoo...
Personally, I have not seen an overweight leopard at the zoo. The zoos I've visited are usually very keen on keeping their animals healthy and active. I do not know what they're fed. I can tell you this though. If there are zoos with obese leopards, then they are zoos with inactive leopards. You can feed a leopard all the raw meat and bones you want, but he's not chasing that prey. If you don't give them room and make an effort to exercise them, they're still going to get fat.

Curing of meats and grains was practiced before the Neolithic agricultural revolution, during the age of hunting and gathering.

Wow, an Answers.com answer from an untrusted contributor who cites no references? Nice. Disease due to living with animals and sewage? Yeah, cured foods totally did that. Nice try though. C for effort.

Now that I look at it, this whole thing looked suspiciously similar to trying to convince someone that Jesus isn't the lord and savior.

America created McDonald's. The American stereotype is a fat person. I refuse to believe this country is actually weight conscious.
America weight conscious as a whole?

I've been to a number of countries now... every time I've ever flown into an American airport, I am ALWAYS shocked at how grotesquely fat a high percentage of the people are. Not that Canada is much better, but... wow...

As for egg yokes, I think they're yummy on toast.

Naw, that wouldn't have been fun or educational at all. This was more like trying to convince someone that the Bible can't be scientifically inerrant, regardless of whether or not Jesus is Lord.

...Although I do NOT want to take anyone up on that particular discussion right now.

With so much of it around, we can't help but be conscious of it! :P

That doesn't mean we're doing anything sensible to correct it, unfortunately. People want to find easy diet tricks, when the answer is moderation and exercise.
