What Is It With Emulation??
Re: What Is It With Emulation??
Emulation for me is a mixed bag. I understand that it can be important in terms of preserving the history of old games and giving those a chance to play games they never got to see in the arcades, still it isn't the real deal. I like playing on the real stuff in terms of cartridges and even the occasional CDs. That's where the nostalgia is at. And of course, emulation does have downsides too...
Re: What Is It With Emulation??
I have followed most of these post and I just have to say emulation with a bunch of roms is just like the pirate syndrome for me. But so was having way to many "real" games that I didn't play. I down sized my collection to just the games I will play and now it is easier to pick a game and play it. So if I want to play a game and is out of my reach money wise for me to buy it right away I will download just that ONE rom and play the game.

well the perfect N64 flash cart has recently just launched 99.9% compatable with ALL roms only 1 retail game it wont load is well banjo twoie.....problem being the flash cat = $200 and at that price you can track down all the decent games on the N64 so in theory you did pay for something....and its not like devs make any money on the retro 3erd party game sales in the first place so your not hurting any one eitherHaoie wrote:Paying for stuff gives it more 'worth'.
lol if i cant stand a game i just dont play it reguardless if i paid for it or not, my prime examples of this generation being: Fallout 3 (cant play more than 2hrs without falling asleep WTF), resident evil umbrella chronicles (good ATTEMPT at an arcade shooter i just seem to be racist against the motion gaming peroid as well as the fact i still have no clue why the hell they put the RE name on that crap they pulled something similar on the PSX mixing an RE game with an FPS dont recall the name), Brothers in arms: hells highway (ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT STAND THE CONTROLLER CONFIGS), all but FO3 i got rid of (only kept FO3 because i have the CE and it will be worth something some day)Lodestar wrote:At the end of the day, I've played through some cruddy games - all because I purchased them and felt obligated to.

For the PS3, I have ~18 games and so far, I have only played 2 of them, one of which is Half Life 2, Orange Box collection.MrEco wrote:The problem I have (And in fact the reason I've avoided emulating anything so far) is that if I can get a game just by downloading it for free off the internet I'll never feel like playing it.
this has been my dillemna for ages. i can't seem to find a balance. I'm either all pokerom (gotta have em all) and grab every rom out there, or buy physical copy after physical copy after physical copy knowing full well i have neither the time to play or space to store it. So is there really a difference?
But as far as emulation is concerned, i like some of the features (filters, save states) but it doesn't feel real, but would if i had the corresponding controller. Anyway, emulation has it's advantages, but i'd prefer the original anyday.

Just hop on U-G and download a bunch of fullsets. Then you never have to worry about "collecting" roms again. They're all right there. Pick one or two and move them to a "current" directory, and don't mess with the fullsets again until you're done with them.alexis524 wrote: this has been my dillemna for ages. i can't seem to find a balance. Re: What Is It With Emulation??
what's odd is I'll load up an emulator and have that too-many-to-focus thing. But if I throw in a compilation disc (official) I'm more likely to play through the few games included.

Re: What Is It With Emulation??
I remember when i first discovered emulation how excited I was. I grew up with only an NES and didnt get an n64 till 2000. I had friends with a genesis or an SNES, but I didnt really get to sit down and play all their awesome games because they werent really into watching me play their stuff.
I spent a lot of time playing games I never had the opertunity to play before and had a total blast. I have just about every rom I could want for every system I could want. When I was a kid I was okay with this, but now as an adult I feel like I am not getting the full experience playing games emulated-I want to play on the original hardware with the original controller. I feel like I am getthing the "full" experience that way, as oposed to a close replication. I also feel like if I have a list of thousands of games to play from it makes them all seem pretty boring. I really enjoy going through my game collection and trying to decide what I am going to play next.
