I totally understand you. It's a ridiculous process. I legitmately enjoy it, but I couldn't tell you why, and I never thought I'd get into it long-term when I first learned about it.
Did you link your website earlier in the thread? Can you post it again please? (Please excuse my laziness.) I'll be interested to check it out.

The image in my sig is also a (very disguised) link. Maybe I should edit that a little.
In any case, my site is more focused on competitive battling. We do have a lot of things we need help with if anyone's interested (mostly work on the wiki, maybe some graphic artists?), but with the site only being nine months old, it's all a work in progress. What we need most, though, is people posting on the forums. Because if people are posting and genuinely interested, that's what keeps my drive going and keeps me focused on the site and not something else.

I borrowed FireRed from a friend a few weeks ago since I've never played a single pokemon game(except for Snap). Anyways....I think that game is pretty awesome. My only beef is the exclusive pokemon to each game. I'm not too far in, but I can see myself possibly picking up another one. I iked pokemon as a kid and never was into it enough to follow it after the first gen. I may possibly pick up another in the future...but right now I still have much to do in Firered.

How do the original ones hold up today, compared to the later releases? (Not taking into consideration updated graphics, sound, etc...)
Honestly? The only reason to play the originals nowadays is nostalgia. They're terrible compared to newer releases and the remakes, chief problem being NO RUNNING SHOES.

I think the original games had the bicycle. You could also play the game on Pokemon Stadium for the N64 and speed up the game speed.

I'll give you that. But if I personally went back to it today, I'd be so annoyed by the difference between physical and special attacks that I'd probably quit if I didn't force myself to play.

As somebody who's first real sit down and play through of a Pokemon game was Platinum for the DS, I couldn't pass up the Red for the price, (given it's condition.) I'm not going into it expecting anything other than the mere fact that it's the game that started it all, and shoould be viewed as just a nice little history lesson.
Also, while breezing through the manual, it says that Rare Pokemon only appear once within the game, and if you don't catch them right then - they're gone forever! Is this really the case? Do they consider "a game" one playthrough, one On/Off power cycle, or one appearance ever on that specific cart, (in which case since this is a 13 year-old used game - I'm most likely screwed!) ??

A game is one play through. Just save before you battle mewtwo, or one of the legendary birds. That way if you don't get it you can power off without saving and pick up just before the battle.
I think red is still fun. 'Specially with the item duplication glitch. Then again, the newest handheld pokemon game I own is crystal.

Don't add to my problems by pretending my past views are still held in the present. I do not have any patience for that. Feel free to ask me what I think now.
The old ones are great. They feel more solid to me, and less of an outright marketing plot. I was so disappointed with Diamond/Pearl when they came out; they felt like they were stuffed with tons of useless mini-games instead of actual innovation. I also dislike the push for 3D-ish environments in the newer games. It's ugly and doesn't meld well with the sprite-based artwork.
And Black/White lose huge points for not having backwards compatibility with any other versions. Any pokémon you import cannot be traded to anything but a Gen V game, even if it's a pre-Gen V monster. Boo.
HeartGold/SoulSilver were wonderful. The style was lovely, the towns had distinct looks, and I loved watching my lead pokémon follow me around. I thought the pokéwalker was a charming touch.
I wouldn't be surprised if the people working on HG/SS had absolutely no overlap with the Black/White teams. The games are completely different experiences.
