5. Tekken Tag Tournament
4. Mortal Kombat Trilogy
3. King of Fighters Dream Match
2. Melty Blood: Actress Again
1. Guilty Gear XX AC+

My top 3 are really the only fighters I have spent time practicing. I actually have characters I "main" in these games (although I'm sure you lot would still destroy me!)

Mortal Kombat and Tekken were the fighters I played when I was young, so these picks are based more on nostalgia than balance. Being a huge MK2 fan, and then a huge MK3 fan, I was blown away the first time I played Trilogy. Same with Tekken, I started with 2 and loved it, loved 3, and TTT just pushed it over the top.

I haven't really played fighters in about 12 years. So back then, I guess it went something like...

1. Samurai Shodown 2
2. King of Fighters '98 (honorable mentions to 2000, 2002, and '95...which I just loved playing despite it's brokenness)
3. SF 3: Third Strike
4. Super SF2 Turbo
5. Capcom vs. SNK 2

I'd like to include Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, Last Blade 2, Mark of the Wolves, and Tekken Tag somewhere in there, too...but whatever.

#5 - Supreme Warrior/Prize Fighter (tie)

I own all of these.

What happened to Fighting Masters?

I could go on about what I think the BEST fighters are but that's boring. Here are my favorites mostly due to nostalgic reasons:

1. One Must Fall: 2097 (PC): A robot fighting game with tight and simple controls (i.e. this is NOT the abomination that is Rise of Robots). Tournament mode had light RPG elements and kept me addicted forever. There's great music and a decent story mode with a surprising amount of plot for each character. It also included arena hazards. There's even secret characters and "fatalities" and you can customize your robot's color and buy and sell robots in tournament mode. It even has news coverage of the fights and a grizzled old mechanic to tell you things like how lucky you are that he loves his job more than his wife when you bring your robot back in pieces. It was way ahead of its time and it's freeware now so go play it on DOS Box. Seriously, stop reading this and go now. http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/94/One+Must+Fall+2097.html

2. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (DC): Completely crazy. Took all the versus games that came before it and went even more nuts. Sure it's pretty unbalanced and has exceptionally corny music but it's all part of the ludicrous charm to me.

3. Tech Romancer (DC): This game is porn for mecha fans. Cyberbots is arguably the better fighter but all of the references and the cheesy stories and expies of real anime characters and robots puts this over the top for me. It's Super Robot Wars in fighting game form without the advantage of licensing (and thus not having to worry about the vastly different scales of different mechs). Not for everyone but I love it.

4. Evil Zone (PS1): This not really a "good" fighting game. It's a pretty unique one though and it brings back all of the warm and fuzzy feelings I have for 80's and 90's anime. Every character in the game is kind of the main character of their own generic anime from a different genre leading to a lot of variety in the stories (which all have over-dramatic narration). It works a lot like the episodic story sequences of Tech Romancer in that respect, except with every genre other than the humongous mecha genre. They're all cheesy and cliche-ridden and the plots are all empty calories but for me it's gaming comfort food. The fighting system itself is a bit awkward but simple. It's not a deep game but it's a fun game.

Come to think of it not only is the storytelling similar but the health bars are vertical like Tech Romancer as well and both games use simple controls that have the same inputs for all characters so I wouldn't be surprised if the two games shared some staff.

5. Mortal Kombat 2 (32X): My favorite port of my favorite Mortal Kombat. Nothing else to say. Jump kick! Uppercut! Toasty!

In no particular order:

-Soul series--Soul Calibur II for GCN is my favorite version

-Street Fighter II--Any version. Hyper mega turbo double fighting world warriors champion edition whatever makes little difference to me.

-Real Bout Fatal Fury Special--I saw the fatal fury series improve more over each successive version (maybe because there was more room for improvement) compared to Street Fighter II.

Tekken Series--I have nostalgia for Tekken 2 in my PlayStation, but I think that Tekken 4 and Tekken 5 are superior games.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy--Not that any MK games are really great. This pick is pure nostalgia for me. I acknowledge that I see Mortal Kombat Trilogy through rose-tinted glasses.

4. Jojo's Venture

Wouldn't it be tied for your fave version then? With the PS2 version?

The GC controller was an abomination for FGs btw, I dunno how you mofos ever played on that shit. I had to buy PS2/GC converters and 2 sticks just to accommodate all the Link fanboys that would sign up for tournaments back in the day (the ps2 pads and sticks were for the other competitors who had some damn sense :P )... you know, way back when TOs gave a shit about pleasing people who wanted multiple console versions for a single game in a tourney.

Thank god those days are gone. :x
