Ugh, that's not good news for me. I'm just for the first time tackling Metroid Prime - I love it! For a FPS, it's really does have that classic Metroid feel about it. I have Echoes too, is it a steep decline or gradual and jumps off at Prime III?flamepanther wrote:Metroid Prime was the game that seemed closest to Super Metroid out of any other Metroid games--but by the time they get to Prime III, I almost feel like Other M was a more like a conventional Metroid game.
Metroid (NES) or Metroid: Zero Mission?

Dude it's just baby steps down. Metroid Prime is HANDS DOWN one of the best and most consistent trilogies ever out there in my book. If you like the first game you'll love the second two. The first is my favorite, but I still love the other games.o.pwuaioc wrote:Ugh, that's not good news for me. I'm just for the first time tackling Metroid Prime - I love it! Comparing them to Other M is pretty embarrassing I'd say.

Yeah, I've got to agree. I was blown away by Metroid: Prime the first time I played it. And I played years after it was originally released.Xeogred wrote:Dude it's just baby steps down. On the other hand I bought Metroid: Other M when it was still brand spanking new and paid full price for it. It was fun at first, discovering the new abilities and gameplay style and such. But it started feeling like a chore very quickly. And the whole game is just far-too talky with extended cutscenes that bore you. And switching from regular view to first-person view wasn't cool at all, it just completely took you out of the moment. I ended up trading it in at Gamestop while it was still worth something.

It's as gradual as it could be, considering there are only three games in the set. Echoes limits the ammo on your main weapons (dark beam and light beam) and has a deathmatch mode, and the surface of the planet feels more like a place from Unreal or Quake I than from Metroid. Apart from that, though, the atmosphere in most areas is generally very Metroid-like, and there are few other gameplay changes.o.pwuaioc wrote:Ugh, that's not good news for me. Corruption drops the deathmatch and the limited ammo, which is extremely welcome, but the areas with Federation troops feel more like Halo battle sequences, and the exploration is broken up by the use of the gunship. At first I was excited about getting to explore multiple planets, and it seems like having access to the gunship should create a greater sense of freedom. Instead, the game loses some of the series' famous sense of expansiveness by not having all of the areas physically interconnected. It's like jumping back and forth between a tiny Halo and several very small versions of Metroid Prime. There's also a visual disconnect, as Retro kinda went nuts with the bloom lighting effects, giving a lot of locations a very "Tron" look and feel to them.
Other M, in contrast, visually looks like I would expect a 3D version of Super Metroid to be, has exploration no worse than Fusion, and plays like a hybrid of Fusion and the 3D Ninja Gaiden games. Corruption is easily the more polished game, but it just feels less like Metroid to me.
Seriously though, I've said everything bad that I can say about either of the Prime sequels. In every other way, they're both solid gold. If you ever get a chance to pick up the Trilogy set, I urge you to do so, as the first two games play much better with the remote. MPT alone is worth buying a Wii.

Sounds good. After Prime, I'll probably move onto Echoes then. And considering the Wii is the next big purchase of mine (although when that will be, I have no idea), I'll keep an eye out for the Trilogy. Is it rather expensive now?

Usually. It was a relatively limited print, but core gamers who have waited this long to get a Wii are going to be wanting it, and very few people want to part with it. Plus, it comes in a fancy metal tin that just screams "charge more for me!"o.pwuaioc wrote:Is it rather expensive now?
I saw a copy fairly cheap at an Entertainmart not long ago, but it was missing the plastic sleeve that goes over the tin.

Exactly. That's not Metroid.flamepanther wrote:Other M, in contrast, visually looks like I would expect a 3D version of Super Metroid to be, has exploration no worse than Fusion, and plays like a hybrid of Fusion and the 3D Ninja Gaiden games.
No real point in needing to mention Metroid Prime 2's multiplayer as being a fault of the game or anything though. I completely forgot it existed until you just mentioned it here, the game itself is still just as long as the original Prime and the development of multiplayer definitely didn't hinder the campaign at all in my eyes. It's a pointless mode that doesn't even need to be mentioned, lol.
If there's a bad installment in the Prime series worth mentioning, that's easily Hunters in my book. The gameplay, the settings, the controls, the everything. Yiiiiiiiiiiikes.
@o.pwuaioc: The Wii Trilogy collection is indeed slightly pricey thesedays. Think it goes for $60 or something on average. That's not that bad, but considering if it had a normal print run it'd probably be really cheap by now... but yeah. Glad I picked it up new even when I still didn't have a Wii at the time. I can't wait to play 1-2 again with the Wiimote. Probably the only time you'll hear me get excited about the Wiimote.

No less so than a hybrid of Metroid and Quake or Halo.Xeogred wrote:Exactly. I won't lie, the original Halo and Unreal do give me some Metroid Prime vibes and vice versa, that's a good thing in my book though, as I love Unreal (Gold) and the original Halo is a guilty pleasure.
Especially Unreal, have you played that one flamepanther? Took me quite a few years to realize the series actually started off as a normal game with an amazing campaign, so it's not just all Unreal Tournament multiplayer stuff. Hah.
I can see the Quake comparisons too.

Re: Metroid (NES) or Metroid: Zero Mission?
Unreal was great. It took everything that was good about Quake, refined it, expanded on it, and then gave it all a more polished gloss coat than I previously thought possible in a PC game. I never would have associated it with Metroid before Prime came along, though.
Halo... I can't stand, for several reasons, and I'll leave it at that.
---------
Another game Other M reminds me of is Burning Rangers on the Sega Saturn.
