I was just joking, you bring up some valid points, but I still think it was the best MGS game yet (although the Ac!d games were really good). Hopefully Metal Gear Rising will be good.AwesomeMonstar wrote:First of all, this isn't out if hate for the series. Played and beat everyone and mgs for the gameboy color is pretty high up there on my list of favorite portable games. That said, MGS4 was a fucking crawl fest, and really, it showed me that splinter cell did the same shit they tried in 4, but better. The story, no, but the gameplay yes. MGS was, as I said, always about stealth ACTION. This means that while I'm evading guards, I'm do so at a quick and efficient way, tap on a wall, lead them near, sneak past. I don't have to worry about footsteps, I don't have to worry about my camo, I can just cruise on by if I'm good enough. 4 decided to stray away from that path and make me crawl my ass past almost every guard, or treat the game as a shooter. That isn't what I came for. What the game did have was an INCREDIBLE ending though, and truly one of the best cinematic experiences out of any game, but if you're core game play suffers, that ruins it for me. The damn film noir bit just pissed me off even more, because it was as if they knew that I had wanted stuff like that all along, and only gave me a morsel to feast off of.classicgamer5 wrote:WHAT?! I get the GTA IV stuff, but not liking MGS4 is a sin, you...disappoint me.AwesomeMonstar wrote:MGS4
yes we all know that metal gear is doomed to have lengthy plot segments, but holy shit. Also, hate the whole change it took with octocamo, mgs was stealth action before, now it's a damn crawl fest. I did beat it, and there were definetly parts I enjoyed, but that game was a huge letdown for me.
As for all the gta IV backlash, yeah, I hated it too... until I bought the DLC. Rockstar listened, and now we have the goofy over the top crap we always wanted.
Oh yeah, portable ops sucks too.

Re: Which was the game you wanted to like the most but didn't?
God, there have been so many posts in this topic. I'm not gonna read them all but just add some of my own thoughts. I'm taking a slightly different approach here. Sometimes it's not so much me not liking a game AT ALL, but just being unable to see why it is so highly acclaimed when it has so many flaws. Here are a couple examples:
Alien Homind-This game only had two things going for it. Awesome visual style and lots of humor. That's ALL it has going for it. Well, some of the mini-games were fun too, but the meat of the game is the main story mode and it is what most reviews of the game focused on. The gameplay is pure shit. It is IMPOSSIBLE to beat Alien Hominid without dying a bunch of times. That's bad design. I remember reading a forum post by a skilled Metal Slug player who had recorded many no death speed runs for that series. He said himself it is not possible to finish Alien Hominid on one life. The game is too random and chaotic and you can't always see bullets. Fundamentally bad design and yet somehow Alien Hominid managed to be a critical darling. High scores everywhere. Alien Hominid has its moments. The distinct visual style and the humor makes it worth playing, but you really have to just tolerate the shitty gameplay. There's a reason the game gives you so many lives and continues because there's no way to beat it otherwise
Odin Sphere-Much like Alien Hominid, this game has charm(an interesting Wagnerian story presented like a stage production) and awesome visuals, but that's pretty much it. The combat is a joke. It's shallow even by 8-bit standards and it's a PS 2 game. The rpg elements are too light and simplistic for any serious rpg fan to take seriously. Not being able to do combos is annoying and so is that stamina bar. And then there is the just plain embarrassing performance issues. There is EXTREME slowdown in some parts of the game. Also, the game has you fighting the same levels and bosses over and over again. Boring, reminds me of Suikoden III's design. I think designers need to realize that the whole replaying parts of a story from different perspectives thing is LAME. Do it via cut scenes, instead of wasting our time by making us play the same shit over and over again.
Metal Gear Solid 3-What the hell? They took out the radar, but kept the overhead view. DUMBEST DESIGN DECISION EVER!! Makes being stealthy damn near impossible and way more difficult than it should be. They fixed this with the re-mixed version, but the original still scored tons of amazing reviews despite its dumb as shit design. Now, don't get me wrong, the story was quite good and the game's final act has some great moments, but like the two games above this is a game where the gameplay feels like a chore you go through just to enjoy the memorial moments(a few cool boss fights)and the story.
Shenmue-One of the most retarded games ever created. First of all, the game had no idea what it was trying to be. It juggled all this different gameplay elements and did none of them particularly well. Just one example, you had these deep Virtua Fighter combat system, which was utterly pointless since you could button mash your way through most of the fights. Then there was the game's idiotic attempts at realism. What do you have to be smoking to think that making players work an actual job and coming home before a curfew time is fun? On top of that, the game had you CONSTANTLY engaged in pointless conversations with people and the story really went no where making this game way too obvious a set up for a sequel. This is the one game on the list I genuinely hate because it was in no way shape or form brilliant and yet people keep saying that it is.
There's a common theme in these games I've mentioned. It's games that are more concerned with being artsy, different or just delivering a good story and not giving a shit about the gameplay. I HATE that. One of the reasons why I consider Hideo Kojima HIGHLY overrated. Although I did love Zone of the Enders 2, which is his best game in my opinion
Monkey Island 2-I only mention this game because many people call it the best of the series and many of the same people bash Curse of Monkey Island. I enjoyed Monkey Island 2, but it has its issues. It's less funny than the first and third installments, characters aren't used well, the ending is shit, the plot has holes in it and Guybrush is much less likeable than he is in the first and third installment and so is Elaine. It's also rather bizarrely dark and violent when compared to other installments. The final showdown between Guybrush and Lechuck is disturbing and doesn't fit the series' humorous tone. I've only played the first three games and Curse is my fave. The visual style is FAR better than the first two, the music, voice acting and sound effects are superb, the story flows better and actually makes sense, it's funnier than Monkey Island 2 and just about on par with the original's humor and the difficulty of the puzzles is just right while some of the second game's puzzles were insane(and yes, I played both on hard mode and figured out every puzzle myself).
One thing I've learned from playing games for years is that many of the best games ever made are the ones that NO ONE ever talks about. There are way too many overrated, so-called classics and masterpieces out there and far too many underappreciated gems

Re: Which was the game you wanted to like the most but didn't?
The Fallout series is the game I really want to like, because I like the whole "what the Russians did attack us back in the 50s" style, but the problem I had with this game is, well, I never really was a fan of RPGs, the first game I got out of the vault, kill a few ants, and got killed during my traveling and never played it again, I skipped Fallout 2 because I herd the game was rushed. Now, theres Fallout 3, that is the game I really really want to like because I do like Oblivion, but my problem with this game that its so boring and depressing, again I like the story and the idea, but gameplay is just boring, and I just can't stand seeing the color brown all the freaken time! I remember walking out of the vault for the first time, I was like, wow...this world looks like shit!! that is like a complete opposite of when I first walked out of the dungeon for the first time in Oblivion, the world looks so beautiful, everything looks alive and well.
So yeah, I don't like the Fallout series.

You pretty much skipped the best Fallout game ever made. Fallout 2 is a big part of why the series made such an impact.TheyCallMeTheSwede wrote:The Fallout series is the game I really want to like, because I like the whole "what the Russians did attack us back in the 50s" style, but the problem I had with this game is, well, I never really was a fan of RPGs, the first game I got out of the vault, kill a few ants, and got killed during my traveling and never played it again, I skipped Fallout 2 because I herd the game was rushed. I really want to like Team Fortress 2, but for some reason I don't enjoy it all that much when I play it and I'm not sure why.
I usually love when game graphics go for cartoony style over gritty realism.
I think utilizing different balanced character classes is a brilliant game design idea.
It's one of the smoothest running online multiplayer experiences.
I like that if I see a person in my friends list playing it, I can just click "join" and I'm in game with them.
I think it's wonderful to see a game get as much support after release as TF2 does with the regular updates from Valve.
For some reason though, I just can't get into it. I can't really figure out where they went wrong with me either. It's strange.

Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment
My bf always tries to make me try them out and I keep hearing so many good things about these games, but I just can't get sucked in the game. I try them out for some hours, maybe days, but then I lose interest. I'm too used to eastern RPGs I can't try out western ones :/
