Good ole' Sirlin, formerly of Backbone and of SSF2THDR, has a couple pieces up on SF4.

I've noticed, especially from comments on Sirlin's blog that there's no consensus on what an "approachable" fighter is. From what Sirlin describes, it doesn't sound like SF4 is more beginner-friendly than most fighting games, but rather less-so. And yet many people have picked it up and seem to be getting into it. I wonder if the fact that the game is flashy and lets you do crazy stuff is good enough for novices to want to spend time with it. Maybe it just presents the perception of being easy to pick up when it really isn't. Who knows...

How people could still be screwing up fighter control customization, though, is beyond me. Haven't the folks at Capcom ever read anything about usability?

What's depressing is that the Street Fighter entries prior to SF4 had good control customization. On the left would be "Light Punch" and you could push any button. If the button was already mapped it would simply swap the mappings.

I felt the same way, since I have been playing HDR for a while before the release of SF4. They definitely bagged a lot of people, I am really glad they kept Dee Jay out of it, I couldn't fucking stand him. I never seen to face anyone except ryu/ken/akuma. Those same three, who all have the same strategy just about. I have three friends, one uses Guile and is ridiculous with him, the other uses Balrog and has no clue what he is doing, and my other buddy uses Abel and he can't seem to do much either. I don't know if I agree that Sagat is really dominant like everyone says, I think he moves awfully slow for my taste, even though I use him often, I still prefer Ken over him anyday.

Just gatta say that after spending a lot of time with the soundtrack, this is the best collection of music Capcom has put together for anything that was ever related to street fighter. Hideyuki Fukasawa has already took 1st place as my most played artist on last.fm.

I might have to check out the soundtrack. In game it feels like very much background noise, which is ok, I suppose, but the SF2 soundtrack was very distinctive even when you played.

Those are called hips. Often girls who have gone through puberty develop them. It helps to allow easier passage of the baby's head.
