I think I'm gonna rewatch both myself here pretty soon, definitely going to be nostalgic!
Yeah, it is a shame. But like you said before, it's not uncommon for a series with only 20-some-odd episodes. The more I think about it, the more I wish that they'd cut back on some of the goofiness of the first half of the show, and instead narrowed their focus like they did in the second half. Not that I didn't find the first half enjoyable. I just think the second half sort of blows it out of the water.
I definitely agree... and Legato > Knives. Hehe.

I know its probably old news to most fans, but I thought I'd pop by and say that I just finished watching Elfen Lied.

It was really good. I certainly enjoyed it, but it was also a difficult show to watch. Everything that happens is so god damn depressing.

My understanding is that the manga ran a lot longer than the show, and thus the two are quite different because some things had to be cut. That's abundantly clear in the ending, which ended up showing a couple of scenes with no connection, and I found myself wondering what happened in between. I spoiled myself on the end of the manga, so I know where things ultimately go, but I wish they'd had more time to fill in some details.

And even though I spent most of the time not really liking her, I appreciated the final tender moment between Kouta and Lucy.

I didn't like Yuka though. She's pretty annoying.

Anyway, I watched this because we just got netflix, and they have a selection of anime available. My queue was already a mile long with movies, and I have a few more anime on the list as well (talk about 500 miles of bad road, I'll get obsessed if I'm not careful) so I'll be busy for a while...

One thing I have to say about that is
that it makes no damn sense. "Well you brutally murdered my family by hey i lov u nao". Obviously it's not quite that bad but he did get over his family being killed ridiculously fast.

To each their own of course, I for one think Elfen Lied is hands down one of the worst shows I've ever seen. Everything about it.

Oh I agree.
Apparently that's something that changed from the manga, where he did ultimately forgive her, but he wasn't so quick and senseless about it. It has to be a time constraint thing.
It's kinda weird, because I liked that moment between them for reasons I can't really explain (I guess I'm a sucker for romantic crap, even if it doesn't always work), but I also cringed because I spent so much time disliking Lucy and, as you said, it doesn't make any damn sense beyond the quick and easy explanation of projecting his sister onto other people.

Well that doesn't explain much, but okay. I'm not really sure what to say. I'm sorry you didn't like it? Its not like I'm calling it the greatest thing ever or anything, it's not, but I did enjoy it. More than anything else though, I watched it because I've heard people talking about it for years and I had an easy opportunity to finally check it out.

Not to gang up on you or anything, you're one of my favorite posters here honestly and I'm not saying your taste sucks, but oh man I hated it too. I watched it around when it first came out and it's up there with the original Hellsing as one of my most hated animes. I mean it's just like... I don't know there were just absolutely no redeeming factors for me. Just incoherent nonsense, fan-service x gore derp, every single character was extremely annoying, chobits formula, agh. Just not my cup of tea. But my tastes are kind of weird, either I absolutely love an anime or I think it's total crap. I do recall thinking it was okay in the very beginning, like first 3 or 4 episodes, but it just got worse and worse.

That said I really need to check out Rumiko Takahashi's works.

Well thanks bruno, I appreciate that. And no worries, I know nobody's trashing me. :D

I understand all of those criticisms, they're all true. And honestly, I've been put off from some manga before for all of those reasons. I really can't pin down what it is that will push me away from one series but not another. In this particular case, it just didn't bother me much. For instance on the fan service front, nudity in itself doesn't bother me at all, but blatant panty/cleavage shots just for the hell of it are incredibly irritating to me.

I'm not always good at thinking critically about some things though. Maybe I could explain myself better if I were. It also means though that I might sit through something that's pretty bad, and walk away from it thinking, it was okay. I'm kinda weird that way.

I should emphasize again though that I'm not defending EL as something amazing. I watched it, I enjoyed it, and that's pretty much the end of my feelings on it. I probably won't ever revisit it because for good or ill, I already got everything out of it that it has to offer.

And definitely check out Takahashi's stuff! Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, and Mermaid Saga are all great series with a different feel. If you ever do check out Ranma though, remember that the manga is far superior to the anime.

There's a scene early on in Elfen Lied when a sniper shoots at her and breaks her helmet.

This proves that the vectors can't stop bullets.

Why didn't they snipe her again?

*shrug*

They're dumb? I got nothing.

Hell, there's a flashback where they manage to kill one of the girls moments before she kills Kurama, and they do it by shooting her in the head with a submachine gun.

It seems to be kind of an awareness thing, as well as the caliber of the weapon. As for why they didn't keep trying that, well you got me. Maybe that's just less exciting.
