Sad really. An entire generation of online gaming is slowly vanishing due to this.

I'll never get to play the Xbox version of PSO because of nonsense like this.

Aren't there 3rd party servers? ...oh no wait, it's xbox :P.

Seriously the least they could do is release their server software, but I'm guessing when they want to push you to buy the yearly update there's no reason to do that.

Xbox Live was required even for the "offline" mode.

OH MAN this happened to me a few years ago! I bought Phantasy Star Online for Xbox brand new and sealed, was totally stoked to play it. I only wanted to play the single player version of the game, so I didn't care if the servers were offline. But then when I put the game in the Xbox... it told me to go to hell. I could not even play the OFFLINE SINGLE PLAYER version of the game, because the stupid servers were no longer online. Talk about ridiculous! I ended up having to buy the GameCube version, which cost a pretty penny unfortunately. But at least it still works offline.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Not with a disc, but if you mod your xbox you can play a patched iso offline.

So the Internet Archive just released The Internet Arcade, which offers quite a few arcade games from the 1970s to the early 1990s, playable in your browser via JSMAME. The few I've messed around with run a little slow, but the scope and size of all of this is pretty impressive.

And their Console Living Room has continue to expand and now has a solid selection of Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games, among others! No Nintendo stuff yet, but old Sega consoles make me happy.
