Dear Esther
Deus Ex Human Revolution + Missing link
Jamestown
Shank
Sonic Generations
Thunderforce III
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Doom (GBA version)
Batman Arkham Asylum
Wolfenstein 3D
Gran Turismo 5
Batman Arkham City
Project Gotham Racing 3
Borderlands
Jet Set Radio HD
Not much to say about this one. Being in widescreen 1080p with 8x AA is nice but it didn't make the experience all that much better since the graphics style is pretty much age proof. Had a lot of fun playing through it again.
By far the best thing about it was the ability to play with a controller that isn't the terrible DC one.

14. Wild Arms 3 (PS2)
15. The Darkness (PS3)
16. Black Mesa (PC)
So yeah...I beat Black Mesa and managed to grab all 25 achievements as well. The Rare Specimen achievement was a pain in the ass, mainly because going through teleporters with the hat was really difficult and required a lot of patience. I've considerably more respect for the Hivehand, which I always liked but never used nearly as much as I did while playing Black Mesa. And once again, the shotgun proved to be a personal favorite, mainly because I could do the doubleshot to drop a Vortigan in a single attack, and I got a lot more shotgun shells than I did magnum ammo.
So yeah, fun little director's cut. There were some small segments cut that I was really glad to see go, mainly because I had found them annoying. Case in point, moving the boxes to get over the electrified water puddle in Blast Pit. I always felt that was a poorly designed moment, but thankfully now I don't have to put up with it.

Don't know if you're aware of it, but there is a sequel to The Darkness that you can try out too.Ack wrote:1. Mortal Kombat (PS3)

So two more down. Wild Arms 3 I've been slowly plodding through since late June. Between work and life, getting through a JRPG takes forever these days, so I don't really get to do it much. The Darkness I picked up on a recommendation from a friend because she figured I would enjoy killing my enemies and then eating their hearts...which I did. I'll go back through it on the highest difficulty some time and pick up the things I missed.

Re: Games Beaten 2012
So I got all the achievements for Mark of the Ninja. For a game where so many things were done well, even the achievement list reflects that. They are all reasonable, attainable goals that simply require players to try different things and to complete all of the game's optional goals.

Re: Games Beaten 2012
I'm aware of it, as the person that recommended the Darkness had actually recommended the sequel first but said I should pick up the original to get an idea of what it's like. I plan to track down The Darkness 2 at some point.Gamerforlife wrote:Don't know if you're aware of it, but there is a sequel to The Darkness that you can try out too.

Ever have one of those moments where you suddenly feel as if you've reached a new level of understanding what a game can accomplish? Dear Esther was that way for me; sure, the story and pace will not entice everyone, and many reviewers prefer to debate whether this is really a game at all, but I feel Dear Esther finds a way to present a story that is only possible in what we currently consider a "video game." If they could find a level of exploration and storytelling with a genre such as the FPS, we'd have a whole new means of presenting ideas and really showing off how such an interactive medium can differ from books or celluloid. We've been building to this for years, and I hope it sees wider implementation soon.

So I've finished yet another XBLA/PSN digital download game. I wasn't planning on playing some many digital download games in the past few weeks, but they just keep putting out stuff that has my interest this year. I'm probably looking to play Tokyo Jungle and Dear Esther next, also digital download games
Anyway, this game is great. If anyone cares, I'd probably score it an 8 out of 10. It's a throwback to the days of 8-bit and 16-bit gaming, and it has a fairly high level of difficulty on par with some of the classics we played back then. Fortunately, the game has frequent save points so you won't get too frustrated when you die. This would have been a pretty damn hard game to beat if it worked off of an old school extra lives system.
The game is a platformer at its core, but it kind of feels like a run n gun at times since you spend a lot of time shooting enemies and avoiding their own projectiles. There's also a variety of other gameplay elements that pop up over the course of the game. There's a shooter level, turret sequences, light puzzle solving, a ton of mini games, a Sonic style casino level, some Metroid style back tracking, upside down sections like Castlevania Bloodlines, and even an extreme sports style trick event. The game likes to mix things up.
The game's biggest gimmick is the fatality system. Every level has a number of mid bosses for you to kill, which initiates a mini-game. Complete the mini-game and you're treated to an extremely over the top, uber violent fatality. Imagine some of the over the top special spells and attacks in the Disgaea series filtered through a Mortal Kombat game. There's always a loud, omnipresent guy shouting out various things when you initiate one of the pre-fatality mini games. It gives the game a little bit of an arcade like feel. Some of the mini games and ensuing fatalities are obvious shot outs to some classic, old school games. One thing that's kind of annoying about the game is that you don't always know what you're supposed to do in some of these mini-games and failing them makes you lose health. This happened to me A LOT over the course of the game. Losing health and lives to mini games is a bit frustrating especially when they get harder near the end of the game. Again, thank god for this game's generous checkpoint system. It's what keeps this game away from a Battletoads-like level of difficulty
I mentioned Disgaea earlier, the story borrows some elements from the original Disgaea and has a similar style of humor. Over the course of the game you'll see a ton of bizarre, surreal, and wacky stuff that also calls to mind the Earthworm Jim games. For me, this game felt like the bizarre love child of EWJ and Disgaea.
The game looks great overall, though some of the character designs are extremely ugly which gives the game a certain indie game feel. Not surprising given that the developer has done a few indie games for the Xbox Indie Games marketplace. The soundtrack is pretty awesome. There are some catchy tunes and beats and one particular song is actually used for comedic effect, similar to what Double Dragon Neon does with its end credits song. The best track is probably the one that plays when you enter the shops to buy weapons, upgrades and items. It just sounds like what a pimp with lots of bling would have blaring on his car radio at all times LOL. It's very funny and makes you feel like you're pimping out your character with every gun, upgrade or piece of fashion you buy.
I still have some optional stuff to finish, which will likely get me the two trophies I'm missing. The game felt fairly long to me, though that's factoring in deaths and moments when I didn't know what I was supposed to do next. I think it justifies its fifteen dollar price tag, though I got it for 12 using a discount from my one month free trial of Playstation Plus
A few sites gave this game some low scores. I attribute that to the game's difficulty level. Just look at how much the low scoring IGN review for Double Dragon Neon complained about the game's difficulty and the difficulty of beat 'em ups in general. A lot of today's video game reviewers just can't handle a retro style, 2D sidescroller. It's like they can't handle any game that isn't a modern day first person shooter or PC style role playing game. One last note about this game, it's published by Sega, and it definitely feels like a Sega style game. Well, old school Sega at least
