Anyone got an opinion on Bayonetta yet? Any good?

nah I don't think so dood. You can make the jump in the NES version. The DOS version is infamous for being a port that's broken and un-beatable. Though supposedly they fixed that part in the UK "Ninja Heroes" version of the DOS game.
Pretty positive. You can make the jump the other way for sure, but I know for a fact you need to use the rope on level three.

This guy writes about the TMNT DOS jump as well, and even includes a download for the DOS game and save to bring you right up to that level so you can try for yourself.

You don't use the rope in that part of level three (and that jump is the only way to get to the end of level three). The only part you NEED the rope is level four. The ropes are used to cross between rooftops; a few optional sections in three and a few required sections in four.
