I finished I few of the games on the Sonic Gems Collection over the weekend. Pretty surprised by the overall high quality of the titles (except for Sonic The Fighters, which is still shit). Short but sweet.

Sonic Triple Trouble
I played through this as Tails and picked up two chaos emeralds. It is most similar to Sonic Chaos on the Master System, in that it is a pared back Mega Drive Sonic game with slightly altered mechanics, the most obvious being stage design and lack of "proper" bonus stages. What is key though is it keeps the speed, control and aesthetic of the MD games. It also adds a new things like a flying spin attack and vehicle sections. In my opinion it looks really good, much better than the Master System Sonic games, although that's to be expected. It isn't too difficult, but I like that sometimes. It's fun and colourful and plays well. What more do you need?

Sonic Drift 2
This was the biggest surprise. I had heard this game was awful but I actually found a lot to enjoy. I think this is due to people comparing it unfavorably with Mario Kart when it really plays more like Hang-On. You can actually, as the title promises, drift which is pretty impressive. I choose Metal Sonic and beat each of the cups but didn't get all the emeralds. The game varies it's track design between traditional circuits and more rally like point to point races which is interesting.

There are problems though. The bends and corners do sort of just pop-up. The other racers are also quite wide and bumping into them stops you dead. This is especially annoying on the track made of water as you both stop dead and then fall into the track. Also before I learnt how to drift properly I had a mare with the tracks in tunnels as it feels like you are being forced towards the tracks edge, kind of like Hang-On.

Still a total shock that it is actually a decent racer.

Tails Adventure(sic)
Another cool game from this collection. Basically, instead of a traditional Sonic style game, Tails Adventure is a slower paced puzzle-platformer more akin to say Wario Land or Wonderboy. It has some backtracking as well, but isn't a metroidvania.

Again, it looks really nice. I'd say that, on the big screen, it looks closer to a Mega Drive game than an 8-bit title. Very colorful and with good animation. The slower pace means the platforming is more measured and Tails has a ledge grab move which is pretty cool. The jumping can sometimes be a bit stiff, but generally it is solid. Tails also has a variety of gadgets at his disposal, although a few of these are just variations on his default bomb move, the best is a remote controlled mini-Tails that can be used to hunt for key items and secrets. The level design is solid as well. After gaining certain items you will have to backtrack through the level and out onto the world map, but the designers were thoughtful enough to include shortcuts so it isn't a chore. And Tails' submarine from Triple Trouble returns as an upgradeable vehicle with its own shooter style levels.

It isn't a world beater by any means, but it is a fun and cute title to spend a few hours with.

I also completed the version of Sonic R on this disc, unlocking all the extra characters and a few runs of Sonic The Fighters, because apparently I have way too much time on my hands. Weirdly, the disc says Sonic R is the Saturn game but it is a port of the PC version. Either way, it's still an acquired taste.

I used to play Sonic Drift 2 all the time as a kid. I really liked it back then. I don't think I would really want to play it now, but I do think it's probably at least on par with something like F1 Race on the GameBoy, which is pretty decent as well.

Yeah, it did remind me a bit of F1 Race or the SMS Outrun. Man, I badgered my parents to get me a Game Gear for ages. Never got one. Received a Subbuteo set instead.

A lot of the games on the Gems collection seem to have a bad reputation/critical response. I can understand it for stuff like Sonic R and Sonic the Fighters which are by their nature divisive, but Triple Trouble and Tails Adventure are very solid games IMO and Sonic CD is a classic. Maybe it's emulation problems I'm not aware of?

I don't know. I personally like both Sonic R and Sonic the Fighters. They certainly aren't the best games ever, but I always enjoyed Sonic R on the Saturn back in the day, and Sonic the Fighters never really struck me as good or bad.

I haven't really played any of the GG games on the Gems collection. The GG Sonic games in general aren't really the best in the franchise, and Sonic Labyrinth may possibly be one of the worst games ever, but I think they're mostly solid games. I don't have really strong feelings toward any of them despite Sonic Drift 2 and Sonic Chaos being about the only things that kept me sane as a kid, with all the night driving I was forced to be party to.

South Park Stick of Truth - Xbox 360

Image

I finished Stick of Truth. My initial reactions were quite negative. The combat is like the Mario rpgs, except enemies don't telegraph attacks well making blocking a matter of trial and error. I didn't like that, especially with many enemies attacking multiple times in quick succession with cheap, non telegraphed attacks that quickly eat away your health bar until you finally figure out the timing for blocking them or just abuse healing items. Other things that annoyed me with the game were the tons of missables, and the fact that you can't max out your character's abilities, typical pet peeves that I have with a lot of rpgs. That's not even mentioning the technical issues with the game that have been widely reported

However, in the end, the game won me over because while it fails to be a great rpg, it completely succeeds in being a great South Park game. All the humor and cleverness that you expect from Matt and Trey is in full effect. In fact, the game in some ways outdoes the show simply due to not having to deal with any of the restrictions of being on TV. F bombs are dropped without any censorship, and things are shown in this game that I don't think they'd get away with on Comedy Central...and that's really saying something given what that show HAS gotten away with. Bottom line, this game is hilarious and has truly memorable moments that I won't forget. It's also one of the most offensive games I have ever played in my life. If I have any complaints with the story it's two very minor ones:

1. Much of the story content feels like, "South Park's Greatest Hits" with a lot of stuff you've already seen on the show, recycled and presented in different ways here. It's like they had a checklist of all the show's most memorable and iconic bits and had to redo them in some way in the game. You'll see familiar things like the City Wok guy fighting the Mongolians, the Goth kids trying to prove they are noncomformists by forcing you to conform, Al Gore obsessing over Manbear pig, etc, etc. Much of the game is familiar territory, but having it all be interactive somehow makes it all fresh and when the game DOES throw fresh content at you, it's pretty damn hilarious and memorable

2. Given that the game has been in development for eons, there's not a lot of the topical type stuff that South Park is known for here. On the plus side, this make it much more unlikely that the game will feel dated in 10 years.

One other minor gripe is the game's over use of fart jokes, which comes across as juvenile. That's always been a problem with South Park though, it fluctuates between genuinely smart and clever, and downright childish and stupid. That's one reason why Futurama is arguably a better show. I wouldn't mind seeing Obsidian take a crack at that license.

Gameplaywise, while it's not the deepest rpg and annoying in some respects that I mentioned earlier, there are a few things I liked. The environment comes into play a lot in this game. Often times you can completely avoid combat by using something in the environment to take out your enemies in hilarious ways. Also, the summons are hilarious, as are some of the special abilities. This may be the only game I've ever played where I can say I used a summon spell to have a gay man shove an enemy up his ass or summoned the son of Christ to gun down some nazi zombies. Fuck yeah!

When you get right down to it, this is a game for South Park fans, not that I am the most hardcore fan of the show myself, but I've seen enough of it to appreciate a lot of the funny content here. I don't think this game will appeal to people not familiar with the show. Most of the fan service and references will go right over their head, a few went over mine as I've not consistently kept up with the show in recent seasons. There also isn't much here for someone just looking for a great rpg. One should approach this as an interactive South Park movie, and you'll walk away satisfied. It pays to be familiar with the Black Friday trilogy as well as this is for all intents and purposes the sequel to that mini event. And people complaining about the game's length are idiots. I spent the better part of this past weekend just playing this game trying to do every side quest and get every achievement, and didn't quite finish doing those things. If you're playing this game for an hour or two a day it can last a while and give you your money's worth. I'm sick of people complaining about game length, especially since most of the people who do probably have huge back logs. That's what happens when every game you buy takes forever to beat.

EDIT: This may be the first game I've ever played to employ a skip cutscene feature as an actual part of the game design. That's the kind of clever stuff you see in this game

Been a while, figured I should update:

1. Dead Pixels (PC) - Run n' Gun w/ RPG Elements
2. Magical Drop V (PC) - Puzzle
3. Reaching Out (Android) - Visual Novel
4. Nanolife (Android) - Visual Novel
5. Darius Burst (PSP) - Shmup
6. Ridge Racer 2 (PSP) - Racing
7. Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower (PSP) - Fighting
8. Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition (Genesis) - Fighting

Thoughts:
Quick run-through of arcade mode in both games (with a little bit of Tower Mode in Darkstalkers).

Why in the hell did I never play Darkstalkers before? Fast and fun, with great sprite and background work. Apparently I have my work cut out for me if I want to keep playing Lilith (low-tier woes). Whatever dood. Pixie-cuts and anime butts ftw.

And of course, now that my Sega is back in action, I had to go back and play the game that started it all for me with fighters. It's amazing how much easier SRK and QCF motions are when you're not an angry 9 year old. There is so much broken shit in this game, but idgaf; I love it to death.

did you beat the extra challenges in ridge racer 2? I remember in the previous one, the opponent cars were so fast that your only option was to get ahead on curves and then keep crashing into them backwards to take away their speed.

There's a "campaign" and I "beat" it, so up it goes. In truth it was probably the worst implementation of a story/campaign in an arena-type shooter I've ever played and they really could have/should have done something with bots a la the Unreal Tournament series for the "campaign".

Still, the game is a ton of fun and I can easily see playing to the level cap, working to unlock stuff, etc. It's got a great "pick up and play for 10 minutes" arcade-quality to the matches and it also has the ability to suck away hours in a sitting. If you played/enjoyed the beta at all, there's a lot to love in the full game.

Dave, did the PC version get a physical release? I had put it on my "when it goes on sale for cheap on Steam" list, but then I heard it's like 50GB download which is... pretty big.
