It was definitely handy in both Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD. Tracking on the map and quick inventory select were nice touches and I never felt that it broke the flow of gameplay. It actually made the experience smoother for me.
I found it incredibly useful in Splatoon. The map button in Splatoon 2 just isn't the same - it's so much ahrder to jump to another player and quickly see where enemies may be coming from with the new system.
+1

That is my biggest concern for Splatoon 2, although I am super excited.

Honestly, I was relieved that the Gamepad wasn't used for anything in BoTW.

I like the option off TV play but beyond that the Gamepad usually annoyed me. I don't like taking my eyes off the television and I hated waving the damned thing around like a moron for "motion" reasons.

It wasn't terrible in every game - the less I had to look down at it, the better I liked it.

For me, two screen gaming works best in the handheld format where the two screens are about an inch apart.

You only wish the Gamepad wasn't used for anything in BoTW.

Enter a shrine, see that damned gyroscope, and begrudgingly get up to fetch the Gamepad from its cradle. Apparently they couldn't find a way to make things control badly enough with the Pro Controller, so they had to resort to that.

Does the Switch version use the gyroscope in the regular controller at least? Gamepad controls for those are just so incredibly bad that it's surprising that Nintendo didn't scrap them.

Otherwise though, yeah, I am not a fan of two-screen gaming with it split up like that. For the DS/3DS it's like having dual monitors or something, similar focus for the eyes and all that. Very different with a handheld device and TV.

Gyro controls on the switch are usable with the joycons in all of its arrays and there are gyro controls in the pro controller as well.

To be honest, the gyro controls work best in handheld mode because the switch isn't as bulky as the wii u gamepad.

Have to disagree there. Everytime a gyro control temple comes up I switch to tabletop mode, because some of them require you to twist the gyros so far that the screen ends up facing away from me and now I can't see. This is especially true when going for chests, as they're often on the underside of the gyro platforms.

If it's like the Wii U, it zeros the puzzle relative to how the controller is held when you "use" the device. So backing out of it and restarting can be helpful. If you mean for the screen though, yeah, I could see doing that. With the Gamepad you're forced to off-TV play for the duration since the game doesn't do screen mirroring, which can make for some odd positioning to keep the screen visible.

I just lifted the controller over my head and looked up at it. Wasn't a problem.

Luckily, I think I've only seen 2-4 gyro shrines so far, about 70 in. I haven't seen another one in ages.

I never think about using the gamepad. Was glad that TP let me play with the Pro controller too.

Someone please explain shield surfing, I don't get how it works at all?

To shield surf, ready your shield with the ZL button (keep it held), jump with Y, and while in air, hit the A button and you'll start to shield surf. I had to look it up somewhere else when I first hit the minigame. I had no idea about it, although I'd vaguely remembered it being mentioned elsewhere.
