Games Beaten: 2013 2012 2011 2010

This was a game I sunk 15 hours or so into in the days and weeks after getting a PS4 but then sometime around the holidays I ended up getting preoccupied with other titles and never went back to it, despite thinking it was amazing. So, I spent a LOT of time with it the past few days...

Everything in this game just clicks - it isn't just the best in the series (it is easily the series' high point), but it is both the best pirate game and the best open-world game I've ever played. Finishing the campaign ended up taking me between 25-30 hours (just doing enough side missions to get supplies as needed) and I have no doubt that there's probably just as much content to go back to for me to dig into if I want. The ship battles are a real high point, but everything in the game is gorgeously realized, the combat is fun and adaptive to various play styles, and it plays like a giant labor of love from the team that created it.

A must play.

The low point and only really 'sloppy' part of Black Flag were the 'present day' scenes, it felt like they were making that shit up on the spot.

A drawback of the series, but mercifully these scenes were few and short - I doubt they added up to an hour in total...

Liberation did it right by doing away with them, what a step backwards.

Yeah, I think I'm going to just skip Revelations and III. Black Flag looks pretty stand alone anyways?

Stupid question possibly, but how 'Assassin's Creed'-y is this game? I didn't like those games much (I definitely didn't like the fucking stupid and pointless future segments they hamfist into them).

A good pirate game though, I am definitely up for. They're surprisingly uncommon.

Is the counter button still in? That counter system is so easy to abuse. I remember killing docens of people in asscreed 1 and not gettin hurt even once and seeing the amount of bodies pile up... that's was the only fun part in what i played.

I had previously played all of 1 and some of 2 and this one felt very different to me in setting/tone, with the exception of the small amount of modern day stuff that intrudes (as hamfisted as ever).

It really feels like it could have been a new series almost - a pirate one. There are famous pirates, stunning naval battles that give you control of ships in a very novel way (that feels weighty and great), and all the pirate "stereotypes" that you might want are also there. Watch this, as an example of the ship stuff, which you can do throughout the game pretty much at any time:

It is still there, but I felt that it became pretty useless once there were more than a few guys on me.

Maybe I'll look into giving it a go when the Wii U version is a bit cheaper. It's worth taking a gamble on the promise of a fun pirate game. I know it's not the best version of the game, but it seems respectable enough.

Beat Ninja Gaiden (nes) again yesterday, as it never gets old.

Man, that Jacquio is a jerk.
