In addition to Tales of Legendia on my PS2 at home, I've also been playing Tales of the World: Reve Unitia on my 3DS while I have down time at school. It's a Japanese-only Tales spin-off (as almost all of them are), but this one is an SRPG not totally dissimilar from Fire Emblem. Characters have movement allowances, there are a lot of them but they have permadeath. The main differences I've noticed are:

A) Everyone has spells. Just like in Tales, all characters have a standard attack as well as an amount of slowly recharging MP they can use for spells and special moves. They even take time to cast, with the game showing you when the spell will go off on the turn order-list.

B) Each character has a speed stat and that dictates when they get their moves and how frequently. Your party generally goes first, but as battles go on, the monsters/enemies moves will quickly get intermixed between your own.

C/D) Very small party sizes and maps. You can only take 5 characters on each mission, and maps haven't been too big or complex so far. They're generally fairly compact, and characters' movement allowances are also fairly small. It's worked well so far. The enemy usually outnumber you so much that the lack of buildings/obstacles is generally less of a concern just because you're focusing on crowd control.

E) Skills like in a Tales game, kinda. Every level up you get some hard stat boosts, but you also get SP you can spend on passive abilities. You can just straight up buff your stats or give defenses to specific elements, but you can also give people abilities like Zone of Control (it takes more MA to get past their adjacent tile) or being able to counter an enemy attack.

It's really fun so far, and for some reason the side-missions (which seem to be mainly focused on getting more characters) have been far harder than the main ones so far. It's really neat seeing all the characters I'm familiar with with their Japanese VA's, and it's also cool getting a kind of preview for characters whose games I haven't played yet. :)

Generally, I try to limit how many games I am playing at once. For some reason, I have not been sticking to this principle recently, so I have a bunch of games I'm playing.

Here's the rundown:

SNK vs. Capcom: Cardfighter's Clash - Capcom Edition - I have been pecking away at this slowly. Sometimes I'll just sit down and play a match or two with the NPCs. I should try the main tournament again, but...eh, why do that when I could go for a third Akuma?

Phantasmagoria - This is for this month's Together Retro.

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - I took a year off from playing this but recently got back into it. I really love this game, but each battle can take a long time. I can't help it, I am cautious when playing strategy and tactical games.

Warhammer: Vermintide 2 - I like to play this one on Steam with buddies. It's part of our weekly co-op gaming that we've been doing for years now.

Zombie Shooter 2 - Sigma Team released a handful of top-down shooters in the 2000s for PC that I enjoyed as video game comfort food. I've wrapped up the Alien Shooter series, and all that's left with the Zombie Shooter games is to knock out this one.

Then there are several Steam games I have been trying to grab all the achievements in so I can put them to bed entirely: Torchlight, Serious Sam 3, Blood and Bacon, and so on.

I am also managing multiple games at the minute, but unlike Ack that's not that unusual for me.

Portal 2 - I'm at the beginning of Chapter 7. I picked this up so that I could start making progress on the games you guys challenged me to beat.

Earthbound Beginnings - A leftover from Together Retro last month. I just recruited Ana, I'm maybe half way through?

Snipperclips Plus - Been playing this on and off with the missus for quite a while. On the last world of this, should be beat before long!

Gravity Rush Remastered - I had my cousin watching me play games on PS4 and I finished the one I was on, so I just picked another to start as I was still chatting with him. On chapter 3 of this, so right at the start

Bomberman Tournament - I started this on a train journey several weeks back and never went back to it. However, I have more train journeys this weekend, so it'll come out again then I'm sure.

Overwatch - This is a permanent fixture. Excited for the Archives even coming up soon.

I also need to make a start of my Together Retro games for the month - I have Shinobi X and Wing Commander 3 on tap.

I'm finishing up The Guardian Legend which I started as part of Together Retro in March. I think I'll have it wrapped up tonight. Those people who advised to be sure to get every available upgrade along the way were absolutely right. This one really takes a sharp uptick in difficulty in Areas 9 and 10! Up until that point I had been shooting my way through the game using my standard powered up pea shooter in both the shmup and on foot sections (with the exception of bosses of course). In these last two areas I've found myself using special weapons against standard enemies which are now stronger and appear in greater numbers. This has been especially true in the shmup sections. Dear lord, those areas are a bit of a nightmare in Areas 9 and 10! At this point I'd say the degree of difficulty has swung in such a way that the bosses are considerably easier than the levels precede them.

I'm withholding opinions on gameplay until final summation, but I will say that it's an interesting game. I can totally understand why it's regarded as a classic/hidden gem, but I'm not sure it really excels greatly in any one aspect. IMO there have been better overhead on foot shooters to have appeared on the NES, and likewise there have been better top down shmups on the system. What makes this game unique is the combination of these elements along with a fun emphasis on exploration and discovery. I'm looking forward to putting this one behind me so I can get in on some of the FMV rampage happening in this month's Together Retro.

I'm slowly plugging away at Final Fantasy.

Also, prfsnl_gmr convinced me to try out this:

I don't go for mobile games usually, but this is rad as hell. A legit "retro" styled experience. No ads or in-app purchases. It's highly addictive and seemingly pretty lengthy. I'm at level 75 or so with no end in sight.

That does indeed look pretty rad. I just may have to spring for this. How would you rank it for actual phone usage? Is it small screen friendly or does the gameplay favor a larger (e.g. tablet) screen?

I was surprised to see Square-Enix as the publisher!

It is rad! I beat the game last summer and loved it. My kids loved it too, and it was a great way to introduce them to both classic games and classic gameplay. Touch screen controls are as good, if not better, than paddle controllers for brick breaking games like this, and the game works well on both phones and tablets. (In my opinion, it controls slightly better on phones because you don’t have to move you finger quite as far to move the paddle.)

Finally, Square-Enix bought Taito, and this game is just a love letter to classic Taito games. Support characters include Bub, Time Gal, Iron Fossil, and the soldier from Front Line among many, many others.

Wow, I had no idea! < ... secretly starts hoping for Taito characters in a Kingdom Hearts game>

They've had Taito for a while. I'm not sure they're going to really massively embrace cross-overs if they haven't already.

They really should, though...They could have Kage, Lara Croft, Cloud, and a Space Invader facing off Smash Bros.-style with plenty of other characters left to fill out the roster.
