I've always thought about doing a mini-itx build for either a home NAS or a stream box. Looking into it recently, you can get a good case/PSU for a pretty affordable price. I know that the SilverStone Sugo cases are pretty popular atm, especially with people doing steamOS builds (Link to Silverstone Sugo). You can get the case and PSU (it's very common to find it bundled with a 300-450w PSU) for about $80. You'd probably spend another $50-$75 on an Asus/Gigabyte mobo, but ultimately, since you're able to salvage from the previous build, you should be able to get off with a pretty low budget.noiseredux wrote:so my Win8 media PC got all F'd up (again). This is a long, long issue I've had w/ Win8 just not working at boot and hours of refreshing to get it going again. I had had it, so I decided fuck it - I'm gonna install SteamOS on it for kicks, as my main use on it is streaming from Steam (plus, I've seen tutorials to get Netflix and Youtube running on there pretty easily). But the install failed (haha?) and I wiped the drive in the process. Oh well. Part of me felt good murdering that box. After some research, I've discovered the shit mobo in these particular Lenovo's are infamous for being really stubborn about installing any new OS on them. So I stripped stuff I could re-use: optical drive, RAM, the CPU, and I've decided I'm gonna put together a cheap SteamOS box. But I want it to look like a console. So I'll try to find a cheap console-style case, a cheap mobo (needs to be an LGA1155 to match the CPU I stripped) and probably a new PSU so as not to use the generic one in this PC. Wish me luck.

Elaborate? Still between a 970 and 4gb 770...emwearz wrote:

I was thinking of buying a GTX790, as an upgrade to my GTX770, however.noiseredux wrote:Elaborate? Still between a 970 and 4gb 770...emwearz wrote:

In 3DMark he got another like an extra 20%+ over my card, which gave me hope, however ingame was much closer.
I am using a 2GB GTX770 (Which I overclock +150/+500) , outside of the Vram requirements for higher textures the difference the performance upgrade seemed to be around the 15% mark (In Metro Last Light Bench, same settings I got I think like 63fps average, the 790 got like 74 if I recall).
I don't recall the numbers, but it was a similar to 15% (a bit higher if I recall) on the Thief benchmark when we were both doing 2k down scaled to 1080P. There was a bigger jump when doing 4k down scaled, but as I will be gaming in 1080P, doesn't bother me.
So I think I will be waiting for a Ti version or the next generation before making a purchase.
If you don't have a GTX770, get the GTX970, it is the better card in every way, otherwise I don't think it is worth the upgrade from a GTX770.

I've never messed w/ anything that wasn't ATX honestly. Though I guess for this build it really wouldn't matter as far as mobo went. Basically it just needs to have HDMI. And basically, I just want to go as cheap as possible for a mobo and case. The only caveat being the "console-like" shape.Ghudda wrote: I've always thought about doing a mini-itx build for either a home NAS or a stream box. Although even something like this

like an un-used office PC could be kind of console-like and fit in my entertainment center. Would be cool if someone had something like that lying around to spare.

Cheap as possible ≠ ITX
Re: PC build thread
MicroCenter often sells off-lease business refurb units. They are pretty cheap, too.

OK, hear me out ... make a video parodying 2001 where you're the monkey and the 970 is the monolith.noiseredux wrote:so this happened...
Using a bone to smash an ancient GPU wouldn't be a bad touch either.
I'd settle for a stick.
(Seriously, though, screenshots and video if you can take it. YouTube, in Chrome, supports 60fps now.)
