The PS4 thread
Re: The PS4 thread
So that means it looks like every other console launch? Oh, okay.

I feel like the launches for all of these machines was very, very rushed - almost to the point where Sony and Microsoft were doing it just to do it. The market seemed to be demanding new consoles, so they were rushed out the door. Nowhere does this seem more evident than when looking at the launch titles for all the consoles. Not one single game for the PS4 or XB1 is a must-have title in my opinion, and the Wii-U was almost as bad.
I think this was the case for almost every gen. Remember the Saturn? Dreamcast? There isn't really a launch lineup at all I feel is particularly strong. The original Xbox had Halo which was one of the best. I remember not really liking a 360 game until nearly a year in.

I have to disagree on the Dreamcast launch, some really good games were ready at launch:
Power Stone, Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Tokyo Extreme Racer, NFL 2k, House of the Dead 2.

You didnt love Perfect Dark Zero, Amped 3, and Madden 06?
Honestly, the best launch I can think of was the GBA. You had solid Nintendo titles, Mario 2 and Fzero Max Velocity, the amazing Castlevania Circle of the Moon, a very good conversions of Chu Chu Rocket, Tony Hawk 2, and Ready to Rumble, and three sleeper hits; Fire Pro Advance, Fortress, and Dodgeball Advance. Sure there was some carp there too, but that was one helluva a line up.
As for my friends with PS4s. All twenty have spoken, and ten had issues with their units, and of those ten all but one had it fixed by Sony like DSH. The one that did not have it fixed, had the power go out while doing the day one update and his console is in UPS's hands.
Edit:
Now that I think about it, the Saturn had a pretty dynamite launch aswell (though small). Virtua Fighter, Panzer Dragoon, Clockwork Knight, Daytona USA. Not a dud in that list.

Dreamcast's launch lineup included the original Soul Calibur, which is still considered by many to be an essential game on the system.
(looks like I was beaten to the punch on the Dreamcast defense though!)
PS2 had a pretty meh launch though.

Re: The PS4 thread
I didn't specify my Dreamcast reasoning. Many felt it was rushed as they brought it too soon and killed off the Saturn. It wasn't necessarily commentary on the launch lineup though admittedly my post suggested it.
Either way, I personally don't care much for the DC library in general, but I know many feel it is strong.
Same with the Saturn, recall how it was rushed out for release earlier than expected?

Re: The PS4 thread
Tbh I see a lot of potential for the PS4, but I hardly play the thing.. I still spend most of my time on the PS3. The only thing that really interests me on the PS4 atm is FPS games in which one is superior on the PC.. Can't wait for Driveclub though.. But hell, I'll probably be playing GT6 on PS3 more than anything this holiday... Really excited for that title as Polyphony seems to knock it out the park when they develop a second GT for a single console

Re: The PS4 thread
The N64 launched with two games: Mario 64 and Pilot Wings 64. Granted Mario is amazing, but that seems like a piss poor launch to me. I don't feel at all the the PS4 launch was rushed. Granted there have been a few bugs in systems, but they aren't wide spread. Of course though the internet is going to magnify the problem. I believe Sony's official response was that approximately 1% of units were defective, which is a bit over 1000. Not bad really.
As far as games are concerned, I was bummed about Drive Club and Watchdogs getting delayed, but honestly, the PS4 has a pretty nice launch lineup. I own KZ (which I think is fantastic), Lego Marvel (which is surprisingly fun), Assassin's Creed IV (which I haven't played yet), Resogun (which is my favorite title so far), and Contrast (which is pretty meh). I also downloaded Warframe which I honestly love for what it is. Friends of mine have been playing Knack, Battlefield, Madden, and COD and all are loving them.
All in all, I think this is the best launch I've seen in a long time. Honestly, gone are the days were you don't see hardware issues creeping up. These machines are far more complex than the PS2 and earlier era, so they have a lot more points of failure. Which naturally means more failed units. However, as long as Sony responds quickly and effectively, I think this should be forgiven. Over all the years I've built PCs, explored Home Theater as a hobby, been a gamer and just been a tech junkie in general, I can't tell you how many times I've had to RMA brand new products. That is just part of the it. It can't be avoided.
Some users don't have the same outlook towards the available games or the hardware failures, but they are entitled to that opinion. But, like I said, I think this is the best launch that I've ever been a part of.

Re: The PS4 thread
Coming to think of it, yes some consoles seemed to be rushed into the market including : PSX , Saturn, Dreamcast, 360 , Wii U, and now PS4 and XboxOne . I feel like Sony and Microsoft pushed the PS4/XboxOne to create an excitement again because the market was kind of getting stale , so its like a jolt to it. If they have made it a 2014 launch , then I bet the hardware would be much more fine tuned and the games more complete and bigger launch line.
In the case of the Dreamcast, I feel this launch was the only rushed launch that made sense. They wanted to attract attention of the consumers for the better graphics (Compare Soul Calibur to MGS for example ) , the online gameplay, and the low price. I think it was kind of a bet, either we hook them all or lose them all. People decided to wait for the ps2 and their DVD drives...
I still wonder if they had waited a year or 2 more , added a DVD drive and upped the specs to be on par with ps2.
