Re: Breaking Bad Season 3 Starts Tonight
There's been talk about how bad of a person Jesse is. Jesse always got the shit end of the stick. Out of every one on the show, he's had the most amount of REALLY bad things happen to him. I sympathize for the character, and he deserves it. The core of Jesse is a good person, giving different circumstances he could have had a completely different life. I blame his parents. I was really glad to see Jesse live.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Like, "Oh, c'mon! What are the chances the guy would take out EVERY nazi?" Maybe pretty good, it's a big ass gun!
To be fair, the keys in the visor thing was done for a laugh. He was trying to hot wire it and after a while of frustration found the keys in the visor and had a look on his face that said, "Yeah, of COURSE the keys were in the visor!" And the keys on the pool table, well, the nazi guy could have easily just given him his wallet and keys back. There was no reason to keep them since they were planning on killing him anyway. It was just to create more suspense in that scene.
Speaking of the keys in the visor scene though, when he starts the car and the radio comes on, did any one catch the song playing? I don't remember the lyrics verbatim, but it was something like, "I might catch a bullet tomorrow, but I'm dealing with the pain in my heart today." Of course, Walt Jr being the pain in his heart and catching a bullet is obvious. And then the baby blue song at the end.
Yes. This episode was about redemption. He made everything right. Well, what was possible at least.
What?

Re: Breaking Bad Season 3 Starts Tonight
Yeah, Gilligan talked about his dislike for Walt, but he never truly pushed him into that un-redeemable territory. I agree he was grey. Whether I was rooting for him or not typically just came down to who he was sharing a scene with. At the end when it was just him and Jesse, I was afraid he'd kill him. When he was up against the Nazis? Walt all the way. But whether or not he had convinced him it was for his family, or whether there were times when what he did truly was for his family, the overall events that transpired were caused by him and his own ego. I just read a list of the greatest Breaking Bad quotes, and was disappointed to see that Skyler's "Someone has to protect this family from the man who protects this family". To me, Skyler was the only character on the show whose actions were 100% for her family, or close to it. Did I want Jr to have a cool Dodge Challenger? Of course I did, and did I laugh at her misguided attempt with the PT cruiser? Yes. But her reasoning was sound while Walt's wasn't.
Re: Breaking Bad Season 3 Starts Tonight
I would say that Walt is far more "dark" than grey - he's done a heck of a lot more harm to the people around him and society at large than he's done good. But one of the things I like about the series is that it always portrays him as a human being and never turns him into a comic book supervillain.
From my perspective, I don't think Walt was *redeemed* in the final episode, at least not by the standards of fully righting the wrongs he's done to those around him. But I'm not a believer in spiritual redemption, so I'd prefer to avoid opening the can of worms associated with that term! Instead I'd say that Walt came to terms with what he's been doing and has found peace with himself and that's really the best that could happen to him aside from dying in denial which would have been GREATLY unsatisfying.

I've just watched the finale.
I can't really say anything coherent about it at the moment. It was just an amazing all around experience, and I'm actually trying hard to not cry.
So satisfying, but after six years with this series, it feels so bittersweet.

I didn't like the finale. It just did not feel on tune with the way Breaking Bad has developed. I think if they ended the show with him riding the red van it would be a better ending, but it might have kept people wondering and asking for me. Death of Walter White seemed very bland and expected. its the oldest trick in the book.
There are a lot of loop holes and I think the writers kind of dropped the ball a bit (compared to the usual quality and attention paid to details of this show):
- Walter is a chemist , where did he get skills to build a mechanical gun in such a short time?
-The fact that he is a chemist is not really used, swapping ricin for the sweetener doesn't count.
-The gun was too slow to kill everyone of the gang members before they could drop down for cover or take action.
-There was no reason for him to ask to see Jesse. He could have dropped down and just started the gun fire
-Walter walking around the city but never being caught even though his face is in the news everywhere. He was even able to get to his wife but the cops some how never were watching her or his old house.
-Walt magically knows where and when Lydia is, he can find where his family is hiding, and he is able to bypass a multimillion dollar home security even though he is wanted.
It goes on really.
I do not care how many people try to argue this but I really feel like the really good guy in the show was Walt. He was the only one who no one ever did anything to help him. He was there for Jesse many times, and as a matter of fact I think Jesse alone led him to his death. Jesse is so ungrateful that even when Walt asked him to shoot him he didn't. His wife caused a lot of trouble to him including the affair, hitting him with a knife, keeping him away from his children... goes on. His brother and sister in law were after him with hatred even though he helped them out with the medical stuff. His old friends that he co-founded the company with trash talked him on TV. After all that, Walt never did hurt any one innocent (IIRC).
Remember he could have easily rode that van and lived his life, yet he decided to come back to pay his ungrateful son in the millions, save Jesse that was going to send him lifetime in jail, free his wife from being prosecuted, and he still is called the bad guy ?
There are 2 things I didn't get:
-Why did Walt decide to kill Lydia, and have he been meeting Lydia long enough to know she always adds that sweetener to her beverage?
-What was the box Jesse was carving? Why was it brought back?

I am really surprised that Breaking Bad's finale had around only 10-12m viewers for rating. I know its a huge number, but when you think of all the hype its generating in the world of the internet and quick access you will be very surprised to know that shows like Magnum P.I. , The Cosby Show, and Friends all had 5x that number! (according to Forbes: http://www.forbes.com/pictures/mfl45ehd ... r-years-2/ )

I have my own version of the finale but no one seems to like it (friends). I thought it would be better if Walt would hand himself in, and after a long trial walking back the memory lane of Breaking Bad they jury would find him innocent, and maybe Walt can go back to being a teacher or being famous whatever.
When you think about it, there isn't really enough evidence to put it on him. Hank, Gus, and about every other mobster out there who dealt with him is dead. Saul disappeared, the money is gone, Jesse is enslaved by the gang. The gang won't hand themselves in neither would Lydia . The confession tape is with Todd's uncle.
I think many people would enjoy an innocent Walt than a dead Walt. I really don't see many people hating on him.
Long post, but a long show too

Anyone who honestly thinks Walt was an innocent hero is not someone I would feel safe around.
Seriously, that's disturbing

Yeah, I can't see this at all. He was directly or indirectly responsible for all the misery that happened to everyone else on the show and was clearly driven by ego and pride through the bulk of the show (if not the whole thing). Not sure how one can see him as a "good guy" given that the show is about him breaking bad.
I do concur that the ending was a bit shit, though. Not sure how any of you could have gotten choked up over it...

Really? I guess you are the minority on this one. I thought the ending was perfect in every way.

I am not saying he is not involved in criminal activity which is punishable by law, but if I was to pick some one out of the show to do business with I would do it with Walt. He was the only one on the show not to betray his partners, unless he was threatened to be killed. I will be very happy to do business with some one who is willing to give $80m just to save my life, when I was planning to put him in jail.
As for breaking bad, yes he did break bad going from a chemistry teacher to a drug dealer.
What are your thoughts on his wife?
