People thinking of the Wonder Boy series as just 'platformers' makes me sad. They're so much more than that. The later Monster World games side-scrolling action-adventures. They're like if Zelda was a sidescrolling series. There's almost no risk of dying from platforming, so I'd struggle to class them as platformers in the strictest sense.

They're also great.

Aww man, I love me some Mystery Dungeon Chocobo!

The original Dissidia Final Fantasy on PSP could count, as the Japanese release date was 2008. Also on PSP, there's 2007's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII... which I really enjoyed, but anyone else's mileage may vary. Another PSP entry is 2006's Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable, which got a full English fan translation.

On Wii there's 2008's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. Actually a few of the Crystal Chronicles games are over 10 years old now...
I just don't like the mystery dungeon formula at all. Roguelikes aren't my bag.

I've played Dissidia through already, and I hated it. I won't be playing that. I don't like FFVII enough to care about Crisis Core, and I'm not a Fortune Street fan.

I've played My Life as a King previously and wasn't a fan either. I'm a picky man!

I think I'm going to go with Kingdom Hearts if FF spin-offs wins. I've owned it for years, so I might as well play it.

which is why the theme is FF SPINOFFS instead of the mainline FF games, so that we might explore all the weird tangents.

If you want it to be, then sure. Again - at least how I look at it - is that the point of these themes is to let everyone get as creative as they need to in order to participate. I would rather you play Ergheiz and talk about it, than to skip the thread because you feel like you're not in the mood to play a game that "counts." I think it'll be fun to see what games everyone decides to play.

I wasn’t going to because i don’t really feel like I have the time to get far in a new RPG but I love Kingdom Hearts. My wife and I never did get around to finishing in Kingdom Hearts 2 (although I beat it myself years ago).
It sounds to me like you should switch your vote to FF Spinoffs then

Yeah it's actually a pretty interesting side-series in its own right. A lot of weird ideas going on in the various CC games.

I'd say that is more true for the Wonder Boy series than the Adventure Island series. The Adventure Island series stayed true to the pure platformer roots longer. Wonder Boy quickly turned into lightweight action-RPG-platformers, and Adventure Island turned into metroidvania stuff. In both iterations' final forms however, one must still jump around a lot of platforms, jump over pitfalls, jump over spikes etc. Still very platformer oriented IMO.

Drats, Crystal Bearers is just outside the ten-year window. I need an excuse to play through that!

As a retro stalwart humbug, I still say go for it.

Crystal Bearers is awesome, super fun, and criminally underrated.

Been waiting to revisit Final Fantasy Tactics, I never got past Chapter 2 in my first try, I think I royally screwed up my party jobs somewhere along the line. I just found a CIB copy a couple of weeks ago so I figure I'll cast my vote in that camp.
