Oh thank you for this. What a wonderful exercise in tone-deafness.

You covered all the intentional and unintentional political aspects of it perfectly, but here are a couple of my own, fluffier thoughts while watching it:

1. Those kids were way too excited when dads demonic little statue suddenly came to life. They acted like they'd just gotten a new pet. It was weird.

2. I think the only job of that old lady in the village was to literally be the bearer of bad news. And she took her job seriously, like, damn.

3. I'm 99.9% sure that animals and people were hurt in the making of this film.

4. They did a good job on the monster's foot. Sadly, it looks like the budget could only afford the one foot.

5. I can't help but think that there had to be a better way for Ami to off herself. Even the angsty-ist of angsty teens would consider that extreme.

6. The monsters bug-eye effect afterwards kinda made it worth it, though.

An hour and a half well spent

So for me Halloween watching isn't JUST horror movies, it also includes TV specials!
That's what inspired me to watch The Worst Witch tonight. I've never seen it before (I'm a little too young to have seen it on TV) but it's regularly mentioned on Dinosaur Dracula so I gave it a go.
It's definitely for kids but I had fun watching it! There are tons of ridiculously unconvincing video-effects, a cat is dubbed with a person saying "meow", Tim Curry sings a song about Halloween, AND the Worst Witch herself is played by Fairuza Balk, who later played the baddest witch in The Craft! ALSO the DVD has maybe the craziest bonus feature I've ever seen: text-based instructions for actual Wicca-style witchcraft! They're super-simple, presumably aimed at kids, but DANG, that's kind of awesome!

I also finished up Pet Shop of Horrors, a four-episode anime OVA. It was pretty formulaic, but I liked it for what it was: super-1990s-style gothic stories with a shoujo manga flair. I have the newish DVD release from Sentai Filmworks and it's unfortunately garbage video-quality; they seemed to have used the same master as Urban Vision's VHS release. But it was still SPOOKY FUN.

My wife watches The Worst Witch every year. It's a little too kiddie for me. Haha

Played some of the Overwatch Halloween event tonight myself.

So many things competeting for my time so i haven't watched anything after Tourist Trap but i did watch the "new blair witch" before halloween.

And it was bad. It actually started out pretty decent despite of all the loud noises the film was making and it was thinking that it might turn actually be good but then it turns to slender man movie. I haven't seen the original in ages but one of the big things about it was that it was possible to think that the witch didn't necessarily even exist but here the uuguli buuguli monster is very much real. There was some creepier moments before everything turns to shit so it was really disappointing to see all the potential wasted.

I watched the new Blair Witch last month as well... except I enjoyed it. I should say that I'm a super big fan of the original, and that I even found some things to like about Book Of Shadows so many I'm biased haha. But I liked that Blair Witch 2017 was actually just a sequel to the first movie instead of a remake.

My girlfriend also watches that every year. Tim Curry's musical number is about the only part I pay attention to, just because it's painfully hilarious.

While it's not a true horror game, I have been playing Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit over the last week because it uses horror trappings. You play as the undead rabbit lord of Hell who has to go after and brutally slay monsters for having seen paparazzi photos of you with a rubber ducky. No, it's not horrific in the slightest bit, but the fact that I'm playing a skeleton rabbit riding a giant sawblade who must kill monsters in Hell...well, it certainly does have its trappings.

The game is an action platformer, which while I'm not big on the platforming, I do appreciate the action. And it has a tongue-in-cheek mentality that I appreciate, such as requiring bizarre mini games to finish off the major monsters you kill. It's not perfect; skippable cutscenes would have been nice. But I'm having fun, and fun is what it's about. Plus it's nice to hear the classic Sega opening whenever I boot up the game.

Tonight's movie: The Mummy's Hand

So the original Mummy is from the time when Universal's monster movies were still A-pictures. This one is pure B-movie and mixes in a good amount of comedy with the horror. But even though it lacks depth, it's still lots of fun!
I think The Mummy's Hand is arguably the first "reboot" of a monster rather than a remake or sequel. It uses a bit of footage from the original Mummy but in a different context, so it's supposed to be portraying something different. The story is completely unrelated, none of the characters have any similarity to the characters in the original; it can't be thought of as a real sequel. But this movie also cements the popular conception of what makes a "mummy movie" - the mute mummy staggers around in bandages, killing everyone who defiled his tomb. One thing I thought was neat was that the mummy's eyes looked like they were altered with a matte effect, which really made him look extra-unnatural. It's not a masterpiece, but it's still solid for what it is.

And why is it called The Mummy's Hand? Well, I guess his hand is the first part of him to move when he comes back to life? **shrug**

Keep it up team! This thread is so much fun.

Last night, my wife an I watched The Monster (2016). In it, a terrible, alcoholic mother takes her daughter to live with her father. Their car breaks down on a lonely road, and they are attacked by some sort of otherworldy beast, along with everyone who comes to help them. I am sure that it is all very symbolic in a Papo & Yo sort of way, but it isn't very scary. Moreover, it is more than a bit too heavy-handed. It was entertaining, and I didn't hate it. I can't really recommend it, however. :|

Also, I started reading The Haunting of Hill House last night. It is the basis for one of my favorite horror films, and I am looking forward to the Netflix series next year.

Finally, I am thinking of starting up a horror game since I'm not really playing anything at the moment. I am leaning toward Oxenfree. Do any of you have experience with that game? If so, what did you think of it?

I was looking forward to it a lot, and I ended up pretty bummed. I know it is a pretty low budget movie, but the monster ends up looking a little too hokey. The ending is also incredibly stupid.
