haha, it's all good. This has become the defacto VR thread anyway. Thanks for sharing, man.

hey so has anyone seen, used, or otherwise heard anything much about Razer's OSVR headset? I've been keeping my eye on it as you can even get the dev version right now for $300.

I'm curious if I'd be able to use it with all the common games that are coming to Rift/Vive or not. I'm also curious about its quality compared to those devices. You've gotta admit that a $300 set is far more inviting than $600/$800.

The last few razor products I bought had quality issues so I'd definitely be weary about tkaing the plunge on it. Especially the dev version since that usually means lower quality screens and the Oculus had dev kits for around $300 as well.

If you don't mind used products I'm sure there will be quite a few people dumping their Oculus development kits for around $200 now that the improved retail model is out. Not sure if there would be any compatibility issues though.

that's an interesting thought.

And I'm not in some big rush here. It's more that I feel like my curiosity could get the better of me at some point if there are products in that $200-$300 range.

Playstation will give me my VR fix at first while I wait for PC compatible headsets to get cheaper and/or better.

If HTC or Oculus could have built a product that did what they wanted at $200-300, they would have. Same with MS and Hololense. The Razer headset is probably more in line with where Oculus started - better specs, of course, but the hardware in it is essentially what a decent phone has. Kinda what Oculus started out figuring they could use.

I suspect that anything short of the capabilities of the Rift or Vive may simply not meet the specs for what upcoming VR stuff will expect.

there's certainly a logic in what you're saying, yeah.

Fragems' suggestion for keeping eyes peeled on DK's is a possibility. I can assure you that I'm not interested in VR enough to take a $600 plunge, though.

Rift arrived yesterday. Quite impressed so far, especially given that I'm still using a GTX 670, which is a good bit weaker than the minimum spec. Stuff I've tried has all worked, but so far I haven't tried anything particularly demanding. As has been reported like...everywhere... the degree to which current VR tech can make an environment or object appear to actually be there is amazing. Not just visually, but audibly as well.

Lack of VR controllers (yet) feels like a real shortcoming though.

holy crap, I didn't even realize you were getting one. #jealous, but I know I don't *need* one right now and am not prepared to spend the money.

Do keep us posted on your impressions, please.

for those of you in the know, what are the differences between the DK1, DK2 and retail versions? Are the dev kits fully functional to play the games that are coming out? Seems like people are unloading the dev kits fairly cheaply on eBay, but I'm curious what the downfalls are.
