I'm doing okay lately, but over the past couple years I developed the habit of buying games and never even playing them, let alone beating them. Figured the year's a little more than half over, so this warrants reflection. Or rather, I've been considering how to reflect on this adequately for the past few weeks or so, and have come to an answer.

I've really done well on both parts, I think. Granted, last year I didn't spend a lot of money, but traded most of my games in for store credit at the local resale store. This year it's all eBay stuff, but I'm actually keeping track of finances of games this year, so it feels like progress. I've bought a good few things, but I've also sold a ton of smaller games I just didn't want to own, and it's really added up. I've spent like virtually no net money in the past 4 months, and that just feels so great :)

I've also actually been sitting down a beating games. Maybe I've just been noticing it more since I always post here about it, but it feels like I'm finishing most everything I start, with only a few exceptions. Some games I'm okay with not beating: As long as I had fun with them and don't feel my time was wasted, I've started to be okay with leaving stuff unfinished :)

Half year update:
alienjesus wrote:1. Focus my buying by using a list of my most wanted games for each platform, instead of just buying things as and when I think about it.
Slipped a bit on this lately :(. Did well for a few months, but the last couple I've just kinda bought stuff I fancied at the time.

2. For every series I own 2 or more unbeaten games for, beat at least 1 game in that series. As of the start of January, this includes:
Age of Empires Nope
Atelier Nope
Danganronpa Nope
Dragon Quest Yup!
Fire Emblem Nope
Final Fantasy Nope
Harvest Moon Nope
Kingdom Hearts Nope
Mario & Luigi Nope
Mario Golf Nope
Prinny Nope
Shinobi Nope
Sonic the Hedgehog Yes
Valis Yup!
Wave Race Nope
Ys Yup!
Zelda Yup!

Lots to do on this one still

3. Beat at least one game for every major console I own. Exceptions for more obscure consoles like Pokemon Mini.
So far: NES, SNES, Gamecube, Game Boy, GBA, DS, 3DS, Mega Drive, 32X, Saturn, Vita, PS1, PC Engine, Virtual Boy
To go: N64, Wii, Wii U, GBC, SMS, Dreamcast, Game Gear, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, 3DO, NGPC, PC, Pokémon Mini

4. Finish the year with less unbeaten games than I started the year with. This isn't a big objective necessarily, but I plan on buying quite a lot this year, so it'll require me to finish quite a lot of stuff.
Currently bought WAY more than I've beaten, to the point where this seems unrealistic now.

5. Try and keep my game spending to less than £100 on average per month.
Not at all :(

6 month update
bmoc wrote:I'm keeping it short and manageable this year.

1. Get a Wii U.
2. Get Xenoblade Chronicles X, King's Quest, Killer Instinct Season 3, Tekken 7 (will it come out this year?), FFXV (preordered just now).
3.Get the PS3 to Xbox One & PS3 to PS4 Brooks converters for my arcade stick.
4. Get the last few Sega Saturn fighters that I want. No progress
5. Get my spare PVM fixed. The image is bowing at the top and I can't correct it with the service menu. Both of my PVMs are currently being serviced.
6. Get into the TG16/PC-Engine scene. No progress
7. As always, put a dent in the backlog. I'm doing ok here. I've been playing some RPGs of late so it is slow going but still a steady pace.

I like the checking progress idea. So...

Exhuminator's 2016 goals:

1. Beat at least three Vita games.

I haven't beaten even one Vita game so far this year. I did play a few at least. Need to get back on this resolution.

2. Beat at least three 3DS games.

Did this with gusto, I've actually beaten eight 3DS games so far this year.

3. Finish the rest of From Software's first person dungeon crawls.
(That'd be: KF3, Shadow Tower, Shadow Tower Abyss)

I've beaten King's Field 3 and Shadow Tower. All I have left is Shadow Tower Abyss, and I plan to finish it by the end of July.

4. Beat Front Mission 5

Mission accomplished.

5. Beat at least two GameCube games.

I... haven't even booted up my GameCube this year. I could at least swing in Lost Kingdoms 2 and Battalion Wars before the summer's out.

I'm doing a lot better on my gaming resolutions versus my summer gaming goals.

Time to update the list!

Exhuminator's 2016 goals:

1. Beat at least three Vita games.

I've beaten one so far, gotta do two more. This will happen later this year when I'm transitioning to my new dork cave, and my consoles will be temporarily out of play.

2. Beat at least three 3DS games.

3. Finish the rest of From Software's first person dungeon crawls.

4. Beat Front Mission 5.

5. Beat at least two GameCube games.

Knocked out number 3 last night. Gonna start on number 5 tonight. Think I'll give Battalion Wars a go. I'm also looking at P.N.03, Mega Man Network Transmission, and Lost Kingdoms 2.

Some of those seem kind of funny to me, but no doubt beating two Gamecube games would be a challenge to me!

My main plans for this year was to tackle through Quake (done) and King's Field / Shadow Tower and System Shock 1. Haven't really gotten there yet, lol.

Ha, yeah I see what you're saying there. Me saying "beat Vita / GameCube / 3DS" games isn't about the inherent challenge. It's about making myself actually play systems that I'd been neglecting.

Yeah I thought that might be what you're getting at. The GC is one of my least favorites and to generate energy and motivation to hook one up... tough call for me. lol, I think Twin Snakes is the only thing I own for it that I haven't beaten anyways. Still curious about it but I just keep replaying the original instead.

If you struggle with the controls for System Shock, there is always the Enhanced Edition available on GOG. The mouse look toggle makes it much more modern.
