Well they are practically worthless to big publishers nowadays, so why not?

Well and the sad thing is if any of you did and put a game out for it, it'd probably be better than some of the milked versions they've probably put out recently

Though it sadly won't bring Silent Hills back to life, hopefully Kojima will start a new studio(as a lot of people are expecting), like how Platinum arose out of Clover being shut down.

It's just tragic what's happened to developers like Konami and Square[-Enix], comparing their output this generation to the sheer volume, variety and quality of games they released during the SNES-PS1-PS2 era. The former's releases for the PS3, outside of Kojima's games, are threadbare to non-existent, whilst the latter has gone from the company that released Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Threads of Fate, Parasite Eve 2 and Vagrant Story in as many months, to what it is now.

It's easy to get pessimistic about Japanese console gaming (though not to the extent of the usually overblown and exaggerated 'OMG JAPANESE GAMES ARE DEAD' school of journalism and internet comment sections) whilst some traditional developers, with immense sentimental and nostlagic value, have increasingly retreated from the market over the past generation, at least there's companies like Platinum, From Soft and hopefully a new Kojima studio to take their place.

I think it's a forgone conclusion that Kojima will continue to make games with his own company. He's probably got more than enough bread to fund things and even if he doesn't imagine what a Kojima crowd funding campaign would bring in.

You're spot on about Japanese games in my opinion. There are a lot of great developers beyond the ones you've mentioned. It's not that they're dead it's just that the old-guard is starting to crumble.

P.T is still the scariest game that could've been :(
I'm actually not too shocked freedom is more important than money Kojima is not a sell out!

Konami, Capcom wishing they had Call of Duty money (figure of speech) and instead it back fired.

Metal Gear V Ground Zeroes had Kojima listed in the credits with what seemed like at least 15 times, and they think they are just gonna pay some team to replace such a mastermind genius?

If anyone is interested, here is the official Konami position on Silent Hills:
Konami wrote:Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic ‘Silent Hills’ project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued.

In terms of Kojima and Del Toro being involved, discussions on future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, and please stay tuned for further announcements.
On an interesting but unrelated side note, Konami has been delisted from the New York Stock Exchange, per their request:

For everyone, please read the full article before you make comments about the delisting.

Some updated information on that:

http://attackofthefanboy.com/news/konam ... nning-end/
Konami has issued the following statement to GameInformer clarifying that show this may not be as big of a deal as originally thought.

“The Company listed its [American Depositary Shares] on the NYSE in September 2002 mainly to diversify its opportunities for fund-raising and to raise the visibility of the KONAMI brand. Since then, the Company has made efforts to enhance disclosures for shareholders and investors with the goal of deepening their understanding of the Company, in addition to complying with the disclosure requirements of U.S. securities laws and regulations, providing consolidated financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States (“U.S. GAAP”), and establishing internal controls in accordance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.

Meanwhile, the external environment has significantly changed as indicated by the increases in trading volume of Japanese stocks through stock exchanges in Japan by overseas investors due to the internationalization of the Japanese financial and capital markets, as well as the narrowing of the gap between U.S. and Japanese disclosure standards with respect to financial reporting due to a series of amendments to Japanese laws and regulations and accounting standards.

While the Company believes the initial objectives of the U.S. ADS listing were mainly achieved, it has judged that the continued listing on the NYSE is not economically justified, taking into account the market changes as stated above and the fact that the trading volume of its ADSs on the NYSE accounts for only a small fraction of the total trading volume of its shares. Therefore, the Company has decided to apply for voluntary delisting of its ADSs from the NYSE and for termination of registration of its ADSs with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) under the Exchange Act.”

I love the fact that no one posting comments on Polygon regarding the article appears to have actually read it...

I like Polygon's articles, but NO ONE in the comments section reads the articles ahead of time. The best you get is an article that's essentially "check out this cool video"; then people at least look at the preview still before commenting.
