What does "beating a game" mean to you?
Re: What does "beating a game" mean to you?
Not sure Ack, but I know Metal Slug 3 on Xbox is terribly difficult and for me feels impossible to 1CC. The later Metal Slug games seem to blow through quarters though. Even co-oping with a friend on the Wii Anthology, it's damn hard.

I appreciate your cult's views. I didn't know about 1CC fervor before becoming a member on this site. I'm glad it exists. I've even gone for a 1CC on a game or two that I really got into. There's something to be found in that process. I'm just not willing to shave my head, put on the Nike Decades, and drink the Kool-Aid. I'm still happy to yell "beaten!" when I see a credit roll, even if it's many credits later. I only will attempt a 1CC if I see the credits and don't feel satiated from the joy of the game.dunpeal2064 wrote: I love these games, and seeing even one person join the dark cult makes me jump with joy.

All of the Metal Slug games are 1CC'able with a lot of hard work. I haven't been able to do Metal Slug X because that bloody fight with the super fast dude with the machine gun gets me every time in that one. His laughter haunts my dreams.Ack wrote:Isn't it impossible in some Metal Slug games to beat it with a 1CC? I'm pretty sure I remember Metal Slug 4 or 5 being considered impossible.

Interesting. I thought there was a later one in the series that had a cheap boss who was impossible to beat without dying.irixith wrote:All of the Metal Slug games are 1CC'able with a lot of hard work. There are videos of all of them being cleared on 1 credit, in fact i'm pretty sure i've seen a no hit - All clear w/Nadia on MS4.Blu wrote:Not sure Ack, but I know Metal Slug 3 on Xbox is terribly difficult and for me feels impossible to 1CC. Metal Slug 3 is possible - the last time I dug into it I put in about 15 runs and now am through first 3 stages no miss.
I think MS3 is a good candidate for the overall discussion. If you pop in MS3 the first time and plug through it, you'll probably put in 15-20 credits and you may very well enjoy it. However, if you can then make a goal to beat it in 10 credits, you'll find your skill and your enjoyment improving (I believe) and you'll discover more about the games design.
For example, on stage 1, you can choose submarine, or to go to up through a cavern. The cavern has more total enemies, but is much easier in the fashion in which they come out, and you can get a hyperpowered weapon from the last enemy, just prior to that 1st boss. The first boss - take your time, fire, jump to the far right of the screen, keep doing this, don't feel the need to get off that extra shot which then leaves you susceptible to close attack.
The second stage is all about learning you are better off becoming infected, then hit with an actual bullet or bomb - so in those situations, you have some clarity instead of panic and then dying. I do a ton of jumping when you have both zombies on the ground and planes overhead. The first few times through I focused on both...now I just kill all ground zombies first, then focus overhead.
I feel like I enjoy the game more the better I get at it and when I beat it on a credit is when i'll feel like i've beaten the game to my preferences. So, while I have seen the credits on as few as 8 (iirc) credits, I certainly don't feel like i've beaten it yet, but I don't begrudge anyone who feels differently, it's an opinion and preference.

I haven't played whatever the last one was...6? I think 7 was on the DS, but I didn't attempt a 1CC. It could be the dude I'm talking about, he is one of the most unfair bosses I've ever seen in an arcade game.Ack wrote:Interesting. I dont think there exists an argument to convince me a sports game or MMO can be 'beaten'. Now, I can see some personally set goals where one puts the game down and says 'ok, I am done with it and got out of it what I set out to do' but beaten? No.retrosportsgamer wrote:Working on a spin-off "What does "beating a sports game" mean to you thread.

Oh come on, you just have to beat it with the worst team. It's like beating an NHL game using Hartford. The Whale. Or a baseball game using any iteration of the Cubs.Jmustang1968 wrote:I dont think there exists an argument to convince me a sports game or MMO can be 'beaten'.
