Did some looking around, mostly on shmups forum, and best I can tell all ships have advantages and disadvantages. The only ship i'm seeing repeatedly called "overpowered" is Gunner, which is one of the available 4 on non-DLC. So, seeing that and with the way the poll is going i'm saying all ships are ok.

Here's what it looks like as far as overall ship power:
Gunner
Ghost
Gunpowder
Treason
Charge
Plot
Bomb
Beam

Speed and technique aren't really factored into power; the most powerful ships also require the most technique as far as I can tell. Example, Beam has the worst main shot (spread shot) and is slow...but he's really easy to control. Charge's charge ball at max will 1-hit kill many big enemies, but it takes time to charge it completely.

This game is damn hard. I am going to need some improvement before I post a score. 700k just isnt' cutting it.

*edit* I guess I improve quickly once I moved to the gunner ship. Here is a respectable score to kick things off for me.

So all ships including DLC are OK now? Man... we really gotta stop changing rules once play has started unless absolutely necessary. Oh well, at least it sounds like none of them have a big advantage anyway, so /shrug.

Sorry for the rule change.

In defense - multiple times input on the extra ships was requested with only Doc chiming in in support of them. I'm not a fan of mid-week changes either, but I also need input from those who know more about it - even Saturday I again stated i'm fine with them but would like input and again there was none..

In this case - Brad has 2 ships available to him at startup - there was no way for him to have known his package for whatever reason had DLC. I could see if we announced this on the 5th or 6th day, but at the time the issue came up only 5 people had posted scores. So really, making the change on the 2nd day really only affects those 5 people and I know it really doesn't affect Doc as he's done, and my son and I will stick w/BEAM anyways.
