If you are going to study something that there is demand for (engineering, medicine, law, software engineering, gun accident insurance salesman ( :P ) ) in the American job market, then it's definitely worth it.

If you are going to study art, you might as well only study for 1 year and then drop out and try to make a living with your skill.

Sorry, I don't live in the states anymore so I was just hazarding a guess based on all the jokes about fine art degrees.

But my point remains that if you are only studying to have a better chance in life, then it's better to pick something which is in high demand.

On the other hand, if something isn't in high demand, but you REALLY love it I think you should still study it, cause someone with high skills/passion for a job, will probably be able to get it cause his passion will make him stand out.

I'm convinced those jokes largely originate with people in miserable 9-5ers who are jealous of art graduates' relative happiness and independence.

If new students would treat college as a chance to study and pursue their passions and focus on a few areas of academic interest (whatever those interests may be) and don't treat it as simply a "necessary inconvenience on the road to a better-paying job" they'll usually (statistically) get more out of it and have a better chance at a successful career in something they want to do. Part of the value of a general education curriculum, for example, is in exposing students to a wide variety of fields and ideas that they may not yet know they have interest in, evidenced by the fact that about 2/3 or so of undergraduates switch their major at some point.

I'll take a 9-5 with a 401k over this " independence" they think they have in their 20s and 30s

Money doesn't bring happiness by itself.

I wonder what's your opinion on making less money to spend on stuff, but having a secure social net (free healthcare, free education, guaranteed retirement fund ect.).

some of us see education as a route to a 401K and independence without all that 9-5 nonsense.

I took a 60k paycut from last year... I know what making less money feels like.

Free healthcare? I don't mind paying for healthcare if it's great healthcare. Same with education.

And I don't believe a retirement fund should be guaranteed.. I think it should be worked for, and the harder you work and the better you invest the better it will be.
