Darksiders, yup i thoroughly enjoyed this game to completion, although it has little replay value, the one time play through was just very epic for me.
Although, i still have many games to play, this is the one game i just feel right with.
Loved being able to mount my stead almost anywhere, loved the God of War style battle system, loved the Legend of Zelda feel to it.

2007: The Orange Box (possibly best game this gen)
That's kinda like saying "Sonic's Sega Genesis Collection" is the best game this gen or something. The Orange Box is a compilation, not a game in and of itself.
Best release? An argument could be made, I guess. Best game? Not applicable.
nah I think it's fair.
BTW, best PSP game this generation: Emulators.
LOL. The PSP did have some great titles actually. I mentioned some in my last post, but I don't think everyone's focusing much on portables with this thread.
If we do start mentioning them more, I'm assuming this gen would be DS and PSP? With 3ds and Vita lumped into the new gen with PS4/Xbox One? I wonder if others would agree. I was going to give some props to Fire Emblem Awakening, but it's a 3ds game so I don't know if it's really part of the current gen or considered part of the new one going forward

DS and PSP is part of the gen we're talking about. Don't get how someone could think the Vita which is even stronger than the Wii, is part of the same generation.

If the DS is part of last gen, I dont know. There are so many excellent DS games. I could probably name 10 off the top of my head.

The DS has a lot of good games, but I doubt it's best games measure up to the best games of other platforms. I think the best PSP games are probably better than the best DS ones, but I am fairly ignorant when it comes to modern handhelds.

Best Fighter - Super Street Fighter IV (AE)
Best Shmup - DoDonPachi Resurrection
Best Handheld - Ivy the Kiwi
Best Platformer - Super Mario Galaxy
Best Puzzle - Kororinpa Marble Mania
Honorable mention: Boom Blox, Tetris Party, Nanostray, Skylanders Giants, Deathsmiles, Yoshi Touch n' Go, Safecracker.
Honorable mention - homebrew, etc: Fruit Ninja, Pixeljunk Side Scroller
I personally don't play mission / strategy / rpg / fps stuff, so my tastes are pretty limited. I have say, I think the wii library had so many outstanding games spread out against so many genres - I think in 10 years it will rival SNES as the best Nintendo library. For those who think it is all gimmicky motion control games...just, no. That isn't to say there isn't a ton of fun stuff that use motion controls (Wii sports, Mario Kart, Ivy the kiwi, Marble Saga, Gravity, Elebits) but most of the great stuff has it as optional or not at all.
@wclem - maybe put all mentioned titles in the OP as a tool to use for others just browsing for titles they passed over this generation...?
Considered this but then realized that I might cause everyone to argue LOL. Truthfully, the shear number of titles people are choosing makes this a larger task than I may have current time for, but feel free to edit my post if you would like.

2005: Nintendogs & Condemned Criminal Origins.
2006: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess & Wii Sports.
2007: Portal, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Halo 3.
2008: Fallout 3 & Metal Gear Solid 4.
2009: Assassin's Creed II.
2010: Red Dead Redemption & Limbo.
2011: Deus Ex: Human Revolution & Sonic Generations.
2012: Journey.
Honorable Mention of game spanning generations: World of Warcraft. It's a shell of what it once was, but it was incredible up til about Cataclysm.
Notes: Wii motion controls were really exciting, though that novelty wore off.
Portal, Fallout 3, Call of Duty 4, Red Dead Redemption, Deus Ex and Journey are some generation defining titles for me. They all expanded somehow on their respective genres, and I would easily and do go back to those games to re-experience them.
