Even in the Mario games?

Especially the Mario games. That is where my disdain for desert levels began.
I don't know the reason why, I just don't enjoy them as much as other levels.
Perhaps I was a cactus in a past life.

Don't know if it was mentioned but PSO EpIII comes to mind for me.

Anyway, for me its no manuals and bullshit manuals on board the game (I'm looking at you PS Vita games).

built to fail hardware.
the most annoying thing in gaming.

my butthole shouldn't clench every time i turn on my 360 at the thought of the dreaded RROD.
or be forced to set up an external HDD for my Wii because the disc drives fail.
and Sony is the worst offender with overheating PS1s, PS2 disc read errors and the PS3 YLOD.

Look, I understand electronics are not bulletproof and will fail, but you've got to wonder if these issues are knowingly released because "fuck them they're gonna buy it anyway" and now we can't even sue them when they sell us faulty hardware

and before someone chimes in with "i've got my launch console and it still runs like a champ!" well, good! I'm glad. that's the way it should be. but it doesn't change the fact that everyone here knows at least one person who has had to re-purchase or repair a console for one of these "common" issues

SEGA really nailed it with the Saturn. :D

What a way to put it.

They did do a pretty good job with the Saturn, but that's not their best example of durability. SMS and Genesis are even tougher.

well cartridge based hardware is pretty durable.
i'm mainly referring to cd based hardware.
that's where i feel the "built to fail" trend started

The PS1 was more an example of trial and error than built to fail. They eventually got it right, after about a year or two. Before the 360, the biggest examples of shoddy CD hardware design were the Sega CD and Jaguar CD (I think).

well you could go as far back and say "the nintendo fds was built to fail" but that's stretching it, I think. model 1 SEGA CDs did have the drive opening problems but i have a hard time believing they were being outright malicious...
Meanwhile SONY has been accused of building their products to fail for decades

I am not trying to contradict anyone but I have tons of abused PS1's that I rescued one way or another and they all work fine. A little cleaning and tweaking.

I have learned that a lot but not all of hardware failures are user caused. Running a console in a cubby hole, on carpet, pillow etc will overheat it. You would be shocked to see how many people do things like this. Jamming very dirty disc or leaving them run for days on end because your memory card is full. Yeah people do this too.

But there are real issues, 360 heating, Xbox drives, and DRE in early PS2.

You would be amazed at how many people abuse things they drop money on. I once saw a guy hit his computer because it froze. Never ran again LOL. I have never thrown a controller in my life but have seen lots of others do it. I saw a guy chip his tv screen with an NES controller. WHY??

I have bought countless systems that people said didnt work and they worked fine for me. I guess they just did not hook em up right!

I second the emotion of hating "escort" missions. Babysitting a weak character with the A.I. of a brain damaged monkey is NOT my idea of fun. Pretty much hate the whole stealth thing as well. Creeping around..hoping not to get spotted..is also NOT fun. Even when playing Metal gear solid..the sneaking was my least favorite thing. Its been done to death at this point.

Cameras in 3D platformers. When you're trying to walk a tightrope or plank by pressing forward, and then the camera pans around so the forward button changes its meaning from 'go forward' to 'jump off and die'.
