Final Fantasy 7-- over-saturated? Over-rated? You decide.

I liked VIII, but I can never go back to it. Failed two replay's. The gameplay is just terribly broken and boring.

This thread has changed topics from Is FFVII Overrated to How Much Does FFVIII Suck?

Admittedly it is a pretty strange deviation in this thread. How about we discuss the faults of the Final Fantasy series in general? Or Squaresoft's RPG library? They're not all perfect.

Discussing their entire jrpg library's faults would be quite the feat. Just discussing their ps1 library would take days.
I'll start:
The Saga games were pretty, but I could not find enjoyment in them.
Chrono Cross was terribly over-rated, more so than VII imo. No character individuality, room for only 2 extra party members, even though you could have 53, and it was pretty much impossible to Game Over
Threads of Fate was OKAY, but still too easy, and too short.
Legend of Mana was terrible in comparison to their SNES titles of the same series.
There has been enough discussion as to why VII and VIII were pretty lacking.
Then again, its not like other companies were on their game in this era. I thought Dragon Warrior VII was so damn boring, Tales of Destiny was crap, the early Persona games were definitely an aquired taste....
I think Square hit the nail with Legend of Dragoon and Final Fantasy IX though. Never played much into Xenogears sadly.

That's like saying ET and Superman 64 are overrated. They suck. They're not overrated; everyone hates them. It can't be overrated unless at least one person on this planet likes it.dunpeal2064 wrote:

But Chrono Cross got perfect 10's in a lot of reviews. It was raved about, just not by Trigger fans.
It also apparently had the greatest soundtrack of any ps1 game
Ironically, the only reason I enjoyed any of Cross was because I had played Trigger, and they do start touching on the story of the first game (kinda... more like raping it, since it was barely there in the first place)
Still, I just hate when an rpg makes everything equipable by everyone. Like VII and VIII, the only difference between your characters in combat were their unique skills, which they had 3 of... which usually sucked too.

Final Fantasy Tactics was great fun. BoF3 s well. I also loved both Suikodens. valkyrie profile. There were some great ones...dunpeal2064 wrote:Discussing their entire jrpg library's faults would be quite the feat. Just discussing their ps1 library would take days.

I'm a Trigger fan. I *hate* Cross. How could any fan like it, let alone a non-fan...?dunpeal2064 wrote:But Chrono Cross got perfect 10's in a lot of reviews. It was raved about, just not by Trigger fans.
Can't tell if sarcasm, doesn't account for ports such as FF6, or just nostalgia-ing.It also apparently had the greatest soundtrack of any ps1 game
The connections between the two feel extremely forced.Ironically, the only reason I enjoyed any of Cross was because I had played Trigger, and they do start touching on the story of the first game (kinda... more like raping it, since it was barely there in the first place)

Re: Final Fantasy 7-- over-saturated? Over-rated? You decide
I totally agree with you, the game was crap. The music fails compared to many other rpgs of the time. All I was saying is that I had read and heard for years that the game was fantastic. Tons of good press.
@Jmustang:
The Breath of Fire games were awesome, I agree. I also enjoyed the first Suikoden, although I have not played the 2nd. Tactics was a savage game.
I did not like Valkyrie Profile. I wanted to play the game for years, and when I finally got it I really dove into it... and I thought it was super lame. Maybe I missed something.
There are a few solid rpgs on the system, but I think overall there was probably 1 really solid rpg to every 10 crappy ones on the ps1.
Vandal Hearts is another one that I thought was super boring.
Star Ocean: 2nd Story is supposed to be good, but I played 15 hours into it and found nothing interesting.

Quite the tough JRPG customer... lol.
Well if you liked Suikoden, the second game is basically the first one x10 in awesomeness.
