47. Bare Knuckle III

No, not Streets of Rage III. That's the butchered American game that's not as good as Bare Knuckle III. I'll get to that is a second. Bare Knuckle III features more moves, characters, weapons, techniques, and endings than Streets of Rage II, yet doesn't get as much love as that game does from beat'em up fans. It supports the six button controller, has hidden characters, has super powered versions of Axel and Skate, features upgraded "blitz" attacks(available when you score enough points), lets characters run (much like Final Fight 3), incorporates a new vertical roll move, and has crowd control moves that don't use health.

The game's only real flaw is that the music is quite different from Streets of Rage II. Most people consider the soundtrack to be a real step down from the legendary music of the first two games. Beyond that, any flaws that the game has are due to the crappy, localized American version. That version of the game features a much more annoying difficulty level, removes the character of Ash from the game (meaning that players miss out on a boss AND a playable character), removes a shot of Axel from the game's intro(which I included a picture of above), changes the story and has some other odd changes like palette swaps.

The Japanese version is the way to go. If you don't mind the different flavored soundtrack, this is actually better than Streets of Rage II.

The music and... the graphics/environments look like ass in Bare Knuckle 3 which is unacceptable for a 24-Meg game released in 94' (especially considering how good Streets of Rage 2 looked). I could go on about a bunch of little things that irk the hell out of me about this game (the death screams are grating and a huge step down, sfx aren't as good and often are missing, way more often you get 5 enemies who are the exact same and don't even have different skin tones or colored outfits, you can't use your offensive special when grappling an enemy, Blaze knocks down her opponent when using her knife defeating the purpose of her normal 2-hit attack, everybody is fast and can run why is Skate in this game "laziness" Why in the hell is Adam not playable? Oh yeah they wasted those Megs on Roo the Kangaroo so Adam only makes a cameo. They added a story and cut scenes that absolutely suck, Zan is a waste and sucks can't hold a candle to Max)

I never quite understood the people that think adding a "few moves and an evasive role" to an already deep combat system is argument enough for why this game stands up against the perfection that is Streets of Rage 2.

Even with all of these negatives this is still a good game. It's just to bad it had to follow in the footsteps of greatness and fell flat.

Because I probably won't be able to squeeze this into the Top-200 SNES topic, Soldiers of Fortune aka the Chaos Engine, a great port of the Amiga classic.

An excellent Gauntlet-style game with forced co-op. Even in 1P mode, you get an AI buddy (who is much smarter than the forced AI in Uncanny X-Men on the NES, the last game I know that uses forced-AI) to help you throughout your journey.

The Amiga-only sequel was more Gauntlet-style mayhem, but you had to go head-to-head with one of the other player-characters (AI or human controlled) in split-screen competition.

I'd like to show that the Genesis had 200 great games even without adding in Sega CD and 32X titles.

52. Mickey Mouse: World of Illusion

It's another great platformer like Castle of Illusion. We get two characters this time who play slightly differently so they may have to take different paths through the game. That's pretty cool. The game has a 2-player mode mode and it looks great too

54. Mickey Mania

This is a fantastic platform game with nostalgic levels based on classic Mickey cartoons. The graphics are simply stunning, perfectly capturing the look of these classic cartoons. The animation is impressive too. There's also a cool looking level with a spiral staircase that moves around in 3-d. Another level has Mickey running towards the screen while being chased by a bull. It looks very cool watching the ground and the trees scroll to the back of the screen as Mickey moves towards you.

I think this is the first game David Jaffe (the God of War guy)worked on.

The Genesis version seems to be the platform the game was developed for and is the second best version of the game after the enhanced Sega CD version(hence me not nominating it for the Top 200 SNES games thread).
