You're in good hands with the SNES version. The main draw of the GBA version is improved audio/visuals, although the additional content is cool, it's not substantial enough to make it the must play version. That stuff is mainly an attraction for people that are already familiar with the game, as with most of the additional content in the FF remakes.
Slightly off-topic Ziggy, but what SNES flash cart do you use? Can you recommend one? I've been considering getting one.

And, you know, being so difficult a 6-year old might die in it. Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't even program in what happens if you get a game over in the SNES version. How would you die in it...?brunoafh wrote:The main draw of the GBA version is improved audio/visuals, although the additional content is cool, it's not substantial enough to make it the must play version.

So Edge just joined my party. I completely forget if I experimented with him last time I played, and if I did, what I found. What weapons do people usually use with this guy? Keep him with two swords? Boomerang and a sword?

I'll PM ya, I don't wanna derail this thread too much.brunoafh wrote:Slightly off-topic Ziggy, but what SNES flash cart do you use? Can you recommend one? I've been considering getting one.

I'm not sure which game you're talking about here.GameMasterGuy wrote:And, you know, being so difficult a 6-year old might die in it. I'd only put a boomerang on him if you're doubling up to put him in the back row or if it happens to out damage a sword. As I recall his spells are pretty weak, so you're using him as a damage dealer and keeping him up using Image.Ziggyman! wrote:So Edge just joined my party. FF2 on the SNES being incredibly easy and FF4 on the GBA being brought back to decent SFC levels of difficulty.MrPopo wrote:I'm not sure which game you're talking about here.GameMasterGuy wrote:And, you know, being so difficult a 6-year old might die in it. Not sure I'd agree there. The magnetic cave is still a real pain in the US SNES release and the US GBA release has several combat bugs that cause enemies to attack at half speed, which becomes really noticeable as you go along and realize the Demon Wall became a complete joke.GameMasterGuy wrote:FF2 on the SNES being incredibly easy and FF4 on the GBA being brought back to decent SFC levels of difficulty.MrPopo wrote:I'm not sure which game you're talking about here.GameMasterGuy wrote:And, you know, being so difficult a 6-year old might die in it. The PS1 version has the RUN button though. That's a huge plus in my book!
Does the boomerang hit every enemy, or is that another game I'm thinking of?
Again this stupid guide that I'm glancing at has ridiculous suggested levels (as I was talking about a page or two ago). You get Edge at level 25 with sub 1,000 HP, so a little weak compared to the rest of my party. The guide suggest leveling him up to 35... a whole 10 levels!? I leveled him to 28 or 29 now, and he seems to be alright. I think I'll get him to 30 or 31 and then enter the Tower of Babil. Again, it's like this guide expects you to grind for at least an hour after each major event in the game. It just seems excessive.
I think his fire spell (whatever it's actually called) is stronger than Rydia's Fire 2 spell, so it's decent. Though it costs 15 MP to cast, and he has a total of 60 MP at level 25. So he's not cut out to be casting magic all the time, but I think it's decent enough to whip out when you know an enemy will be weak against a certain element. For example, I'm leveling up in that cave in the over world where the Tower of Babil pokes out. A lot of random battles have 6 of those annoying bats that use that vampire/drain thing on you. Edge's fire spell can knock almost all of them out in one turn, if not all of them.MrPopo wrote:I'd only put a boomerang on him if you're doubling up to put him in the back row or if it happens to out damage a sword. Not true at all. The GBA/PSP versions are incredibly easy, mainly due to the ATB bug MrPopo mentioned. If you know what you're doing you can breeze through the game with no grinding and zero KOs without breaking a sweat. A shame, really.GameMasterGuy wrote:FF4 on the GBA being brought back to decent SFC levels of difficulty.
Re: Final Fantasy II - Like an old comfortable sweatshirt
The GBA version was so poop easy I got bored and never finished it. The "tiny" bit of work on the visuals wasn't enough to make me care to keep going, and the lag spikes sucked. The PSP version was also poop easy (it's based off the GBA version, ATB bug intact and all), but the new visuals and all were enough to keep me interested, and that it had been years since I completed the game. But to an extent, playing FFIV Chronicles first definitely kind of ruined the other versions for me, heh.
@Ziggy587: To be honest dude I'm just being picky and you're probably safe with an SFC translation.
the differences are all minor and technical fixes, like the Atmos boss can be glitched in some way to make it the easiest fight ever (one of the hardest bosses in the game easily), and things like this aren't possible on the GBA version. Just simple fixes like that you won't even notice unless you're looking for them probably.
We need more FFV fans onboard!

FF5, here I come!
... I just have to finish 4 first.
On the subject, has any one ever played Final Fantasy 3 for Famicom/NES? Is it worth playing? I actually have a FF3 Famicom cart that I put the English translation on. I've played the opening of it a few times, it seems like it could be a decent game. But is it actually worth playing? I have the DS remake as well (I got it with my DS) but I was never too interested in playing that version.
Small rant:
