Haha this is what my grandfather did the first time playing Super Mario Bros in the late 1980s. He ran right into the first goomba and seemed strangely happy about it. Turns out he thought he was the goomba and Mario was the enemy.Valkyrie-Favor wrote:I brought Super Mario World to a party since it's usually a hit with everyone. Popular, easy to play, major chick magnet, etc.
But last week I had to explain how it worked, to a 17 year old girl. Yes, you jump with B, and run by holding down Y. That's about it.
Then she ran right into a Goomba and asked, "Did I win the Mario?"

Re: Non-Gamers Say The Darndest Things
I remember as a kid, I was in the basement playing the (then relatively new) NES when my big brother can into the room and watched me for a minute. He too was a gamer, albeit a really old school one. Anyways i was playing a game I had gotten for my birthday, when my brother asked confused, "What the hell is this game?" "Ninja Gaiden." My brother turned away for a second. "Ninja Guy Dan? Weird name. Dude must have issues with the velcro on his hands.."
I cannot tell you the amount of times I still hear people refer to controllers as "paddles" and the old carts as "tapes".

Calling the NES carts "tapes" must be a regional thing or something, I've never heard it outside of this message board.

Re: Non-Gamers Say The Darndest Things
Mine is more of an insult. I have family members and even friends that think it's immature that I play video games at 35 years old, that it's a child's toy. I find that non gamers just don't get it and that's fine. You don't have to love video games like me but have some respect for it. I consider it a passionate hobbie and it's what I like to do in my spare time. I don't insult someone who likes to paint, go fishing, or into photography. For the most part I ignore the hate or insults but there are times where it's hard and my defenses go up.
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

The back of Super Famicom carts calls them Cassettes. I call them cassettes if I need to see them behind the counter at a Goodwill - it is just easier.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Calling the NES carts "tapes" must be a regional thing or something, I've never heard it outside of this message board.
I dont have the issue of my friends and family calling gaming childish - most of my friends are gamers. However, in the past, this was a huge issue, especially with the family.
Then again, my family thinks I am crazy for helping run a fan convention. Now my recent Skylanders love has caused worry with some of my friends, but then again some of them watch My Little Pony so they can stay the pot.

Pretty much everyone called Atari 2600 games "tapes". "Atari tapes". I think it just extended to the NES. It didn't help that the primary source for games were video rental stores. Back then you didn't just buy the games you wanted to play, that was too much money.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Calling the NES carts "tapes" must be a regional thing or something, I've never heard it outside of this message board.
Selling half my NES/SNES/PS1 collection (ending Dec 1):

One thing I notice between younger gamers and older gamers is the term for a game's stage. I (age 25) say "Level". My brother in-law (age 33) says "Board".

I get that quite a bit and I can ignore all of it, except sometimes when its coming from me best mate. He'll ask about something he sees on my shelf, i'll start to tell him about it then he shout over the top of me to assert his opinion that games aren't for him. I don't mind this from most folk, but it gets my goat when my closest mate feels the need to dismiss my hobby that way. Especially when I listen to all of his nonsense.Evildeadmanwalking77 wrote:Mine is more of an insult. ... snip

Yeah I don't get this. Where does "Board" come from? I'm 33 and I wouldn't call it anything but level or stage.Jerkface Killah wrote:One thing I notice between younger gamers and older gamers is the term for a game's stage. I (age 25) say "Level". My brother in-law (age 33) says "Board".
